^ reading your post i remember my Linkin Park phase and how it grew into an obsession and resparked my interest in bands Rage Against The Machine and Sound garden and I fell in love with Cursive and Mindless Self Indulgence.

I think I went through a total change of life as well during that phase. . . .

cardboard adolescent 08-31-2006 09:30 PM

Let's see here...

4th grade and before basically all I listened to was some Star Wars soundtracks and whatever happened to be on the radio

5th through about 8th grade consisted of a lot of crappy metal with some good metal, and some pop rock stuff.

In 9th grade I started getting into punk, first NOFX and Rancid and eventually Dead Kennedys, The Clash, The Misfits, etc.

In 10th grade I continued my obsession with punk, discovering Television, Richard Hell, and of course, post-punk. So I obsessed quite a few months over Pere Ubu, Wire, Bauhaus, Joy Division, Mission of Burma, etc. etc, and then one of my friends turned me on to grunge, which led to Mudhoney, Green River, and ultimately Husker Du, Meat Puppets, Minutemen, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., and most other alternative bands of the 80's.

11th grade I think is when I picked up math rock, shoegazer, indie rock in all its various forms, jazz, hip-hop, post-rock, stoner metal and doom, noise and noise rock, and generally a greater appreciation for singer-songwriters, especially those with avant-garde flourishes like Jim O'Rourke.

Which brings us to this year, 12th grade, so far my recent discoveries have been Violent Femmes, Mos Def, John Zorn, Magnetic Fields, and a couple others which mostly fit into the categories mentioned above, and a new-found love for garage rock, particularly garage revival/garage punk bands. And I've found myself going back and listening to more hardcore punk which I haven't really been too interested in since 10th grade.

White Lies 09-01-2006 05:43 AM

11: Total Blink 182 fanboy

12/13: After a brief obsession with black metal of all things, I got into punk more - NOFX, Bad Religion, Ramones, AFI, Lagwagon etc

14: Start getting into more hardcore influenced stuff, like Strike Anywhere, Rise Against and also got into ska-punk. Operation Ivy were my favorite band at this point.

15: I started listening to 80s hardcore, after being blown away by the Dead Kennedys. Also got into folk-punk, like Against Me, Defiance Ohio and Mischief Brew.

16(now): I still like hardcore, but I'm getting more and more into "post-punk". The Minutemen are my favorite band, and ever since I listened to them I've been getting into bands like Husker Du, Gang of Four, Big Black, Mission of Burma, NoMeansNo, Butthole Surfers and Wire. Sonic Youth are the latest band to really impress me. I'm also quite into early emo as well, which appeals to my hardcore tastes as well as my new-found desire for more experimental music. Native Nod, Rites of Spring, Moss Icon and Indian Summer are some of the bands I'm really enjoying just now.

riseagainstrocks 09-01-2006 07:46 AM

5th below: Pop.

6th-7th: Punk Rock. some music with screaming and "heavy" parts (From Autumn To Ashes)
8th-9th: Still Punk, and some Hardcore
9th-10th: I discover extreme metal.
10th-now: Death Metal, Melo Death, Hardcore, Progressive Rock, Grind, Noise, Post-Rock

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-01-2006 08:26 AM

My mother grew up listening to the radio rather than watching TV and I guess that rubbed off on me because I was aware of bands like Kraftwerk , Blondie , XTC , The Jam , The Beatles , David Bowie & The Rolling Stones from about the age of 5. Yet if you were to ask me about kids TV from then I wouldn`t be able to tell you a single thing because I never watched it.

Anyway...

Age 5 - 7 : Pop , synth pop , new wave
Age 7 - 9 : As above plus punk
Age 9 - 13 : Metal/Punk
Age 13 - 16 : Grunge / Punk / Glam Rock / Rock n Roll / Indie / Hip Hop / Alternative (This is around the time I started earning my own money , it was all spent on music :D )
Age 16 - 20 : Britpop / Dance / Psychadelia / Indie / Electronica

Since then i`ve not really got into any genre I just pick & choose whatever i`m in the mood for although i`ve expanded by adding soul , funk , blues , post rock , folk and all sorts of other stuff to what I listen to.

explosions-in-my-pants 09-01-2006 09:03 AM

4th - 6thGrade: whatever was getting air play & whatever my dad played.

10th Grade: 80's music one hit wonders, and old rock msuic like before.
11th- 12th Grade: Classic rock and pop punk, and random types in between.

DontRunMeOver 02-20-2007 10:51 AM

At the age of 15 I was quite the Bon Jovi fan.

Strangely, I had progressed from liking Guns and Roses, Blur, Green Day and Oasis when aged 12-14 to liking Bon Jovi. One big step backward really.

Until 12 it was Rolf Harris and Chas'n'Dave all the way. No BS. Also, lots and lots of classical music.

I'm glad to say I never liked Limp Bizkit, the Spice Girls or Britney Spears.

The Foo Fighter's first album was released July 5th 1995. I'm 18 and was born in late '88. You're 17 (according to your profile), so you could indeed have been 6 when their first album came out, however, I find it highly unlikely that you would call yourself a fan of them after only their first album and one of Grohl's first outings post-Nirvana.

As far as I go, pre-Middle School I didn't really listen to much music other than the Country that my Mom played in the radio. I got into punk (The Clash, The Damned, etc.) in 6th grade and by late 7th had moved onto the heavier and more violent sounds of Discharge and Flux Of Pink Indians. In 8th grade I was given a mix cd that had Forever Is Forgotten on it and I was enthralled. I grew into Metalcore with bands such as Undying and Coalesce all through 9th grade and gradually grew into Death/Black/Doom through time spent in the scene.

Now as a Senior in High School I listen to a lot of different kinds of music, from the post-rock of Isis and A Silver Mt. Zion to the brutal death metal of Origin and Decrepit Birth.

Melkor 02-22-2007 05:21 AM

Age 8 - Deep Purple, The Beatles (Smoke on the Water & Eleanor Rigby being my first songs ever).

Age 9-12 - Cliff Richards, Classical (Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Handel, etc.), Indian music and more of Deep Purple and Beatles.

Age 12-14 - All of the above...and Iron Maiden. Greatest Heavy Metal band eva!!1!!

Age 14-16 - Discovered Megadeth and subsequently, thrash. Unlike many, I was pretty unusual in that I didn't really get into Metallica atfirst. Found them complicated.

Age 16 onwards - Power Metal!! and some Death/Thrash/Black Metal (Deicide, Amon Amarth, Sepultura, Kreator, Emperor, etc.)...But Power Metal is my favorite genre.

And believe the fact that I have never once strayed away from good taste in my life...my dad made sure of that.

I've been into music since birth, my father is a Drummer, my Papa plays trumpet, grandma is a keyboardest, uncle played sax, mom played piano... It was all around me.

Till I was 12 I was into gospel, big band, jazz and the sort.
Then I saw Alice Cooper for the first time! It all went to hell from there! LOL
I got into the Glam Metal, then Heavy Metal, punk then before I knew it I liked almost everything from Glenn Miller to Sepultura to Rob Zombie. Pretty much, if I dig it, I'll get it and listen to it.

NaNaNer 02-22-2007 01:30 PM

I am constantly going through musical phases..if I like a certain band I look for bands with a similiar sound...and that how I think my phases have evolved...
