Yea. I'm not saying that they're poorly written songs. I just don't like how they're presented. You could say it has more to do with production than anything. It kind of sounds like that pre-recorded stuff on a keyboard. I can't think of anything too much more wonderful than a man and his guitar.

Charlemagne 04-05-2010 08:00 AM

I like him some, right now I am really into just the song "Atlantic City" and that came to be because I have two really good covers of that song, and I wanted the original. I like his stripped stuff, kind of like Devils and Dust.

Also Paul Baribeau and Ginger Alford have a good Bruce Springsteen covers album, called Darkness On The Edge of Town, which is worth checking out.

TheBig3 12-01-2010 07:53 PM

This isn't his song but I love what he does with it, and Warren gets a huge cred bump from these lyrics.

Goblin Tears 12-02-2010 12:52 PM

Bruce is amazing, love most of his albums...Born To Run, Born In U.S.A. and Nebraska are my favs, but some of his later releases like Magic are amazing too.

Can't stand Springsteen. Hate his overusage of cheap sounding synth and loathe his vocal styling. His music is way too white middle aged middle class for my liking.

You hate the middle class?

Yes, from personal experience, I generally dislike middle class middle aged people.

Even then, I generally coin the phrase as a figure of speech, not that I feel everyone in the group fits the mold. Just the attitude as I see it. Bruce Springsteen is an act that garners of their sort of overly mellow middle of the road attitude. Not saying it's bad, just not for me.

Springsteen was 24 when he released his first album. Just sayin'.

How often do people use "middle of the road" as a positive thing?

I think you're just missing the point with Springsteen because he's rarely mellow.

What have you heard?

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 12-03-2010 08:04 PM

Born in the USA about a million times(one of the most slow, irritating, experiences imaginable). Dancing in the Dark about a million times. Born to Run a few times. No interest to get beyond his hits. I've probably passively heard more in my lifetime without thinking of it, as well.

As for being mellow, he's mellow by my standards. Then again, I'm typically conditioned to ultra-frantic music as a personal taste.

As for him being 24, I wasn't saying I didn't like him because I thought he was middle aged. I don't have anything to base hatred of the man on. I just associate his music, possibly unfairly, with the demographic. Maybe it's a tad immature, or close minded, to label his music as "slow and white" but that's usually how it sounds to my ear.

It's too bad that you haven't heard anything from what is easily his best album, Nebraska. Tons of great songs on that album, including "State Trooper" which sounds like early Suicide played on an acoustic guitar.

That's because of who listens to him now. I doubt he had a big middle aged demographic back in the 70s.

And I have to say I'm unclear on why "slow and white" is somehow bad. Sunn0))) are slow and white. Bohren & der Club of Gore are slow and white. That doesn't prevent them from being good.

Nebraska.

TheBig3 12-04-2010 09:38 AM

I think its a perspective thing at this point, because Springsteen may not break out chromatic solo's in the 8va octaves or use 16th notes for the kick drum, but his lyrics can be as heavy and as ruthless as some of the most vicious metal there is. Not to mention the accordion and saxaphone in some of his songs paint a blacker mood than most artists.

And I don't mean to take a dig at metal here, because I like metal, but his heaviness comes from reality which makes it worse. One of my favorites is 4th of July, Asbury Park

"Did you hear the cops finally busted Madame Marie for telling fortunes better than they do, for me this boardwalk life is through, you otta quit this scene too."

What a gut-wrenching way to talk about the dreams of your youth dying to the realities of a miserable adult life of working to the bone.

Goblin Tears 12-04-2010 05:25 PM

He's very real and down-to-earth, and some of his songs are quite relaxing and poignant.

Raust 12-04-2010 10:19 PM

I don't really like the boss. He doesn't really sing in a lot of his songs he's really good at screaming and shouting with little to no melody involved with soft rock music playing in the background. It's not really my thing.

I can understand the accusation of being soft rock since, at his worst, that's what he is. But saying his vocals are "screaming and shouting with little to no melody" just makes me think you've never heard him before or something.

I agree. If anything, soft, relaxed vocals and concise melodies are among his trademarks.

TheBig3 12-05-2010 07:43 AM

The Boss is one of the most polarizing artists on these forums. I hated him for a long time too, but once you have some of the experiences he sings about I think its hard to ignore the power of his work.

jimboslice423 12-07-2010 08:19 PM

The Boss is the best. I dont think there can even be a logical argument. He has so many albums, and they are all amazing. I saw him live, and it was by far the best show I have ever seen.

Spiritinthesky 12-09-2010 10:54 AM

I love a bit of Bruce. Saw him on the TV the other night, what a nice guy.

Love-song 01-30-2011 11:43 PM

...I'm a big Springsteen fan from way back...and I agree...seeing him live...especially the first time...was probably the best show I've been to... this is one of my favourite Springsteen songs...If I Should Fall Behind...I love this video with the whole band taking turns at the mic...

*******

now Everyone dreams of a Love lasting and true...
...but You and I know what this world can do
so let's make Our steps clear so the Other may see...
...I'll wait for You
should I fall behind...
...wait for me

Buzzov*en 01-31-2011 03:06 AM

Got to see him live many times. Family friend was his personal trainer so used that as ways to get to sold out shows and back stage.
See him around here once in a while.

Nebraska is with out question my favorite album.

Love-song 01-31-2011 09:07 PM

...I've only seen him twice...many years apart...I agree...Nebraska is a classic...

...a wonderful...heart-felt version of This Land Is Your Land...

-------

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps...
...to the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
and all around me a voice was sounding...
...this land was made for You and me

Buzzov*en 01-31-2011 10:28 PM

I really love the whole album. One of the few albums I have that I can listen to it from begining to end with out skipping one song.

TheBig3 02-01-2011 05:47 AM

Nebraska is that good huh? Its one of the few I haven't listened to. Can you give me a few to check out? I've heard "this land is your land" (if thats from it) but it was on the live in '79 disc.

"This Land is Your Land" isn't on Nebraska. That album is fantastic from beginning to end though, definitely worth getting. A few of my favorite tracks from it: "Highway Patrolman", "State Trooper", "My Father's House".

bob. 02-01-2011 11:23 AM

Atlantic City.....

Love-song 02-01-2011 12:07 PM

...sorry if it looked like I was saying "This Land Is Your Land"...was on Nebraska...

here is Mansion on the Hill...from the album Nebraska...

in the summer all the lights would shine...
...there'd be music playin'...people laughin' all the time
Me and my sister...we'd hide out in the tall cornfields...
...sit and listen to the mansion on the hill

...I really like the album...The Ghost of Tom Joad...as much...and maybe even a little better than Nebraska...

here is The Ghost of Tom Joad...

-------

now Tom said...Mom...wherever there's a cop beatin' a guy...
...wherever a hungry newborn baby cries
where there's a fight against the blood and hatred in the air...
...look for me Mom I'll be there
wherever there's somebody fightin' for a place to stand...
...or a decent job or a helpin' hand
wherever somebody's strugglin' to be free...
...look in their eyes Mom you'll see me

This is my favorite song by him. This exact version.

Love-song 02-02-2011 10:46 PM

...a great version of Thunder Road...always makes me want to drive a little faster...

-------

hey...what else can We do now...
...except roll down the window
and let the wind blow back Your Hair...
...well the night's busting open
these two lanes will take Us anywhere...

TheBig3 02-03-2011 08:09 AM

Do you ever feel like parts of Thunderroad sounds like a Christmas Song, and at others Frank Zappa's "Joe's Garage"?

Maybe its just that 70's Sax, but everytime I think, did they have the same guys backing them on this or what? (album version I mean)

yoshiman 02-05-2011 01:45 AM

Hmm, I don't know very much about this guy. I'll start some research and decide whether I like his music or not.

Love-song 02-06-2011 02:29 PM

...listening...thinking...when I think of Santa Claus is Coming to Town...I do think of...

...never made me think of Zappa...listen...I don't hear the resemblence to Joe's Garage...

I was always a John Couger fan myself, verses Springsteen. Cherry Bomb is probably one of my favorite by Couger. That's just my opinion and preference concerning Springsteens music.

Jedey 02-12-2011 08:00 AM

Bruuuuce is definitely the best of the best.

John Cougar's material contains more funk and soul as an artist. (For me anyway). Just listen to Cherry Bomb by John Cougar..whats Springsteen's got that's so much better musically than Cherry Bomb?
