Best Avantgarde Metal Band

come on.. best avantgarde metal band!
Who is it??/

boo boo 07-19-2007 10:16 AM

Haven't heard this term very often.

I'm sure Mr Bungle falls into this category.

beat yr own KID 07-19-2007 11:27 AM

Estradasphere is members of Secret Chiefs 3 and possibly the most talented and eclectic band on the planet.

www.myspace.com/estradasphere

CaptainSuck 07-19-2007 01:28 PM

Maudlin Of The Well, Mr. Bungle, Sigh...

Laces Out Dan! 07-19-2007 01:32 PM

Definitely Arcturus.

Sound Devastation 07-19-2007 05:39 PM

I voted Ephel Duath cause i really like The Painter Pallette... though i would certainly say Kayo Dot, Kongh, Fall of Efrafa or Amenra

Larkrise 07-19-2007 09:42 PM

I voted Diablo, but I also like Unexpected very much!!

cerberus 07-20-2007 01:51 AM

ahh Unexpected! They're ****ing awesome.

beat yr own KID; Estradasphere is awesome too, but I wouldn't consider them, nor Secret Chiefs 3, Metal. :P

jackhammer 07-21-2007 05:19 PM

Yes it's old man time again, but CELTIC FROST-INTO THE PANDEMONIUM is generally classed as the first Avant Garde metal album. Touching on electronica, classical and world music. This album was'nt well recieved on release, as CF were one of the early fore runners in thrash and euro death metal. Nevertheless I have always loved this album, and cannot stress how radical this was when it was released.

Why not? They sure do play it pretty well. Have you heard their new cd?

Muzak 07-21-2007 06:21 PM

Mr. Bungle if they count as metal.
there are many amazing avant garde bands out there but I cant deny the awesomeness of the bungle.

cerberus 07-22-2007 04:32 AM

crap.CRAP! How could I forget Mr. Bungle. :/

Rocky 07-23-2007 11:09 AM

Yeah, Arcturus. Obviously. I can't believe they're not even listed in the poll. :p:

riseagainstrocks 10-09-2007 11:15 AM

I'm glad Ephel Duath was included because they are far and away my personal favorite of any "avante-garde" groups.

Frewen 10-09-2007 11:31 AM

Got to be !T.O.O.H.! for me; shame they're not around anymore. :(

Sound Devastation 10-09-2007 04:15 PM

ooh a Torche fan, stick around :)

Muzak 10-09-2007 05:11 PM

!T.O.O.H.! are tech death, not avant garde.

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-09-2007 05:19 PM

Is there any reason why you can't be technical & avant garde?

I wouldn't really call them that, but as inventive as they are, I don't think of the term avantegarde when I listen to them.

Inuzuka Skysword 10-09-2007 05:46 PM

Ulver's later stuff is Avant Garde and it is definitely my favorite.

where did I say that?

Frewen 10-10-2007 01:19 AM

Ok ok, assuming !T.O.O.H.! aren't avantgarde metal, then Gorguts probably win get the nod pour moi. And that wouldn't happen to be Helen from Sound Dev would it? ;)

Well in this specific case thats how it seemed to me what you were saying. Someone said they thought this particular band were avant garde you were quick to dismiss it and say that they are 'Tech metal'. Now I assume only having limited knowledge about metal sub genres myself , that would mean this band play technical metal ,which is why I asked it it was not possible for a metal band that are technical to play avant garde material and be considered both.
Not trying to start an arguement with you or anything , it just there are so many genre arguements on this forum and something i've noticed about them is nobody seems to be willing to admit that a band may have more than one aspect to their sound and seem quite happy to place them all in one box. I just wanted to see what your reasoning about it rather than just dismissing out of hand , because avant grade in any artform isn't the sort of thing you can box up into one thing.

Muzak 10-10-2007 05:05 PM

It is certainly possible, I would say that Gorguts is a Technical/Avant Garde Metal band for their extreme experimentation and unusual guitar techniques which I would certainly call Avant Garde alone if they didn't use Guitars, Extreme Metal Drum techniques, and Death Growls in which that also makes them Technical Death Metal. That type of genre mixing is quite common and certainly can accept it when presented with it.

In the case of !T.O.O.H.!, I don't hear anything in their music that tells me they are Avant Garde. The riffs, drumming techniques, baselines are all technical death metal styled. The only thing that might separated them from the rest is their general creative approach to their music (how the solos are handled, song structure) and their unique vocalist but in the end that holds little weight, and most certainly not enough to call them Avant Garde Metal.

Agreed. Gorguts is a good example of a technical/avant-garde metal band. So awesome.

Any reason why there are a whole load of poll threads now on the first page? Most have the polls closed and there are no new posts in them.

I assume it's because someone voted in the polls, thus bumping the threads, then one of fellow mods closed the polls so it doesn't happen again.

Bad music (Trivium, Hoobastank) seems to be the common thread here, so obviously a newbie.

Diablo Swing Orchestra is fantastic; Pandora's Pinata is amazing.

Doctor Nerve with their album 'skin' could qualify here, although they are known as a RIO (rock in opposition) band :

other than that, Norway seems to be home for avant-garde metal :
Atrox
Arcturus
Ved Buens Ende
Virus
Fleurety
Ansur
Enslaved
Ulver
Organ
Shining
Solefald

Other bands that deserve a mention :
Akphaezya
Toby Driver projects : solo, w/ Kayo Dot and Maudlin Of The Well
Unexpect
The french answers to Mr. Bungle : Igorrr, Vladimir Bozar n' ze Sheraf Orkhestar, Carnival In Coal

and the more jazz oriented avant-garde acts : Ruins, Koenjihyakkei, Sax Ruins, Naked City
