Geographic Sounds
 

My guitar teacher once went off on a rant saying that because of the internet there's no such thing as a "localized sound" (bands from the same geographic area sounding similar). I really don't think this is true. Case and point: my geographic area, southern Ontario. My favourite band from this area, The Last Archer (myspace/thelastarcher) cites influences from Thrice to Coheed and Cambria, and though these citations are completely justifiable, there's still something about their sound that links them to nearby bands such as The Fully Down (myspace/thefullydown). Is it just my ears because I'm from this area? What do you guys think?

He is talking rubbish. In Britain a lot of Manchester bands have a swagger about them, Bristol bands use a lot of Electronic aspects to their music to name but two cities. Of course there is also diversity everywhere, but social and economic factors have a huge bearing on the music within that particular area.

I agree. certain cities especially stand out... Brighton for example has a very diverse but very distinct scene.. Here in Nottingham (and also Sheffield) theres alot of stoner doom that is significantly different from the releases coming over from the US.. In Norwich there was a very strong punk and hardcore scene.. havent come across any similar bands in the midlands.

Theu difference between American/British/European music is also noticable IMO.
