Funny story. When Clapton left the Yardbirds they first recruited Page but he was too busy with sessions so he suggested his best bud Jeff.

When Page finally did decide to join he had to start on bass.

Blow by Blow was my introduction to him and it's still my personal favorite, it's one of the more accessible fusion albums out there, nothing too crazy but every track is super memorable because they're built on such solid hooks from Beck. Nice production by George Martin too.

I know jack sh*t about guitar techniques and technical proficiency alone has never been enough to impress me, not if there's no hooks or no feel, fortunately Beck's playing was overflowing with both.

For example his solo on Looking For Another Pure Love is short, simple and sweet, with just a touch of flash with that little flourish of descending licks at the end, not a wasted note and it perfectly compliments the song.

There's a million guitarist with better pure 'technique' than Beck had.

There's not a single one of them (except maybe Yngwie) who would have accepted a head cutting duel against him.
They all knew they would've been flayed alive by the guy.
