I'm glad Paul gilbert is up there. The first song I ever heard from him was The Echo Song. I looked into his music further and Its very innovative stuff. If you haven't heard of him before i suggest looking into it. Hes got live videos all over youtube.

Paul Gilbert ... maybe not the biggest shredder - but the tastiest player in my opinion!

But as for my fave: Paul Gilbert is the coolest. Yngwie obviously is the best (he is the most technically skilled guitarist ever). Petrucci is a close second to Yngwie and obviously is in the best band of all of them and writes the best stuff. But my fave has to go to the master himself who started it all, Mr Satriani |

Hmmm...Thought Vai would have more votes.

Yes, it's a shreds vid. No, it's not the original audio! |
Petrucci is god among men!!
|
Yeah, the god of boring people to death.
For me this is a tie between Eric Johnson and Yngwie. |
Satriani has a great deal of songwriting ability. Sure, a lot of his stuff is wankage but he's got a nice mix overall.

Gilbert, since he fit the format and also did more interesting playing than the other fellers. Oh, and he was joined by Bruce Bouillet. Instant win.
EJ was also great, but I don't think he was the right guy in that musical setting. Ditto with Yngwie. I wouldn't include Satch and Vai, since they're always part of G3. Better just sticking with the guests. |
I don't enjoy G3 all that much, mainly because I need more variation in music. With that said I'm a huge fan of John Petrucci, not only because he's able to play fast and in many different styles, but also because I really like his songwriting, his riffs, his melodies. :)
The middle part of Damage Control is one of my favourite musical segments ever! It's crazy how he managed to put so many awesome things into a single song. (I like Satriani as a person and guitarist too, but his songs aren't that appealing to me.) |

I chose paul gilbert because he is the only one up there who is still considered amazing
petrucci is terribly overrated. he is not good, he is not versatile, he is not original, and his band is not awesome i am a huge fan of yngwei but i dont think he has anything on gilbert |

khfreek: So, I've listened to the album several times already, and it's just *really* not my cup of tea. It's not because he's a bad player or that it sounds bad, but because there's not enough stuff happening in the songs! I want variation *within* the songs, not several individual pieces playing the same thing for 4 minutes and then end. I'm always waiting for something interesting or unexpected to come up, but there's just another guitar solo and then the song's over. That most things feels "been there done that" doesn't help either, like 4/4 and standard chords at most sections.
(Listen to "Damage Control" by John Petrcci at the 6:14 transition! Best musical moment ever! :) With that said, the middle section of Damage Control is the only part of his solo album I really love, and there's nothing like it on the Paul Gilbert album.) So: Awesome technical ability, uninteresting music for me. :) It's all about personal preference though. |
My favorite is the one that plays music instead of notes... which is... none of them.
|
Every musician ever plays notes. Fool.
|
Yesss but they don't all play music! (In my not so currently humble opinion.)
|
Paul Gilbert for me. Good mix of technique, speed, and feeling. Like his work with racer x.
|
Eric Johnson, i like his style, and not just cause of Cliffs of Dover, in fact, that's my least favorite of his stuff
