Me lame friend keeps trying to tell me that thursday is punk. Please give reasons why they are not punk! They are one of the best bands ever, but please help me with stating an appropriate genre and why! thanks

Since I belive in the whole "opinions not labels" thing, i would classify them as music. but in labels terms, i would say they are emo...not typical emo...but the song understanding in a car crash and cross out the eyes...just look at th lyrics.

slow and pansy have exactly NOTHING to do with being emo. zero. the reason everyone thinks that is because emo was the first sub-genre of punk (attention people who think they are elitists: don't start pouncing on that, emo grew from punk, no question.) with enough confidence in their musical abilities to slow down a bit. Emo can be fast or slow or anything.

Thursday is emo. emo is not a bad thing. and stop with this stupid "they are post-hardcore!" junk. Post-Hardcore IS emo. Don't believe me? read on.
Ian MacKaye (i hope everyone here knows who that is) went from the famous HarDCore band Minor Threat to the undeniably emo Fugazi. This occurrence was extremely common. Hardcore was quickly dying out in the late 80's, and many hardcore kids started emo bands AFTER they were in hardcore bands. Hence Post-Hardcore.

Thrice 12-10-2004 03:22 AM

Yeah, I defintnely read that book too ;) but how do you know thats emo? Just b/c it is in a book? How is TBS and Saves the day not emo? IMO more people refer to the latter bands as emo.

clort 12-10-2004 01:49 PM

book? and i never said something wasn't emo. i said thursday was. Post-hardcore and emo are the same thing. there are different genres within this movement, but they are all emo. like all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares, but somehow you managed to learn about squares before rectangles, so until you really started to think about it you thought squares and rectangles were two different things.

ish 12-18-2004 07:13 AM

definately emo!!!

dog 12-19-2004 07:04 AM

these guys sound like a good band, does any1 recomend a good song?

sleepy jack 12-19-2004 12:42 PM

The Side of Brightness is pretty good ahh im not good woth emo.

Enfilade 12-20-2004 09:15 AM

Well just because something is Post-Hardcore it doesnt mean it MUST be Emo.. I'm sure there are other sub-genres and offshoots of Hardcore that exist.

The Ian Mackaye/Minor Threat to Fugazi transition was typical for that time but it certainly didnt monopolize it.

And yes I would call Thursday an emocore, or screamo if you will, band. Definatley emo but with thicker roots in hardcore than emo.

PS - I recommend "Paris In Flames" or "For The Workforce, Drowning". Just to stay away from the typical Understanding In A Car Crash ( Although that is QUITE a song )

covle 12-21-2004 02:31 AM

I agree. Way too many people put too much effort into categorizing a band, fitting them into a genre, then finding a sub-genre to fit them, etc etc. I wish that people would stop wasting so much time debating weather it's punk, or pop-punk, or emo, or emocore, and just decide if they think it's good music or not. I you like it, that's all there is to it, it doesn't matter in the least what genre it is.

covle 12-21-2004 05:58 AM

yeah...what she said

ish 12-21-2004 09:41 AM

yeh LOL
