They should have ceased from making music after their original bassist passed away during the time of "Master of Puppet's" release. It seems that everything afterwards made them sellouts or otherwise figures of ridicule: Making a video for "One," from "...And Justice For All"; streamlining their sound, becoming a pop act with the Black Album; becoming very confused with "Load" and "Reload," the infamous Napster brouhaha, and we all know what happened with St. Anger. It doesn't help that they've been photographed coming out of A-list stores in downtown New York.

The point is that they are no longer [quality] Thrash, in attitude as in sound. It seems they lost their honesty when they lost their youth, which is what happened with U2. U2 was a fantastic band before The Joshua Tree, and they did release a pretty good album in "Achtung Baby," but Bono has become a caricature, a satire, of who he used to be.

That is absolutely fucking brilliant. It's a virtual note for note recreation but it still has it's own identity. I was worried to how they would manage the breakdown and subsequent guitar harmonies but that was glorious. I need to get this for sure.

TheBig3 03-01-2009 12:58 PM

Just the same, U2 and Metallica's cataloge is about 9 times better than most other bands.

The problem with the sell out thing is that they played metal. And like punk, its a race toward the bottom with who can do the most without appearing to distance themselves from the anti-social clown who can't wash his hair or talk to girls.

Thats who determines the "sell out" line. If you clung to metallica like a newborn suckeling from the teet because they made you feel good, and then they cut your hair and you disowned them like an Italian-american who came home preggers one day, well thats the individuals problem, and certianly not Metallica's.

Too many pussy-ass metal heads truely believe that metal is a religion, but its a security blanket from a large number of these greased up ****s to never get over their own problems, they're just going to hop on a microphone and pretend to be a dragon or some ****ed up **** because if they can't be loved they want to be feared. This is the reason for so many metal sub-genres.

Note: Metal subgenres are a classy way for metal bands to vote on who could beat up who; do you like vikings? aliens? dragons? robots?

And the sad reality is, that all of these raging vaginas and their fantasy conquerors would all be dismantled by any mildly attractive female speaking to them at a party.

If you don't like Metallica, fine. I can respect that, but they played what they wanted, and few bands today have a 5th album that sounds like the first. in fact I'd say no bands have a 5th album that sounds like the first, and all they're doing is exploring new avenues, but not ****ing metallica, they're selling out.

Why? Because their fan base back in the 80's wasn't cool enough to listen to Motley Crue, or Prince.

I read a web page once, it may still be out there, called Alternica and it was a whole big bitch fest because they cut their hair. it was some sort of turncoat move according to them but when faced with the choice of looking normal or like ****ing dio, I'm not going to have a bozo the clown weave while the crown of my head has such a reflective surface you can see your face in it.

jackhammer 03-01-2009 01:13 PM

I think the fact that virtually everything that they have put out after Cliff burton's death has been so deeply analysed and dissected the fact that both Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets are STILL brilliant albums get's completely overlooked which is a shame.

Many many bands struggle to make one truly great album, especially Metal bands and for an album that is over 22 years old to still stand proud in the upper echelons is still a great achievement.

Piss Me Off 03-01-2009 01:21 PM

Most metal bands couldn't make an album as strong as And Justice For All either and wouldn't you know Cliff only wrote 1 song for that.

But if people want to disregard that because simply because they recorded a video then they can be my guest.

I have incalculable respect for Metallica. I think that in a stuffed genre like Thrash, they did things differently, and better even, and that made the genre popular. The reasons I posted above are what I've heard are criticism against Metallica. I think its a load of ****.

...And Justice For All's crappy production made it fiercer to me than Master of Puppets, and the Black album was just what they needed to stay relevant. I think that they are survivors in a genre that is often misunderstood (and thanks to all its ridiculous subgenres, ridiculed).

jackhammer 03-01-2009 03:51 PM

I hate ...and Justice For All. The production is terrible.

Roygbiv 03-01-2009 04:18 PM

It's amazing how much of a contrast ...And Justice For All has with the Black album.

jackhammer 03-01-2009 04:30 PM

I think the simple fact is that Metallica got too big before their time. With Burton's demise they lost their way and I'm sure we would have seen them exploring many musical avenues with a lot more focus. it's almost as if they tried too hard with each subsequent release. Thrash Metal is not the sort of music that should be put upon a pedestal and invite allcomers to throw stones. It's a musical niche that Metallica unfortunately seemed to step out of.
