4. Tony Levin

Did he score high because of the stuff he played with the Chapman Stick or was he judged solely on his Bass playing?

just curious

I did think about that. But yeah his chapman stick playing counts too, it has bass stings and they're tuned like a bass, so in part it is a bass instrument, and Levin plays it as a bass instrument, it's more often used by bassists than guitarists.

And it was him that popularized the instrument and it's use in progressive rock.

Take the Chapman stick out of the picture and he still qualifies by a long shot.

Does anybody else really like the bass playing of Dan Adriano (Alkaline Trio)?

Update: Gallup and Lemmy has moved up, Mani and Lally has moved down.

Joe Lally is fucking clutch, WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!?

I just felt that he was too high where I originally had him, but he certainly belongs on the list. He is a great player.

After revisiting Gang of Four today i'd totally back Dave Allen.

One thing I love about post punk is how the bass sets itself apart from the guitar. Some pretty great bassists have come out of that movement actually.

When I started playing bass, rush, led zepplin, RHCP's were all bands I loved to play. The best songs I loved playing was from jeff ament of pearl jam. that first album, he played 8 string basses, fretless basses and 12 string bass (jeremy). I'm sure he wasn't the first to do this but it was a great mix.
