The Music of Motley Crue

Motley Crue are a group that I always dimissed as being the best of a bad bunch (Ratt and Quiet Riot etc) Then I met somebody the other day that is a huge fan and wanted to know what I thought about their albums........Well as I `ve never even heard one I couldn`t answer the question!!! Sure...I knew the singles, the videos and their wild lifestyle etc but had never listened to one album!

Now I`ve been lent practically all their stuff and will listen to an album each day for the next week or so and give an objective opinion.

it would be interesting to know what people think of this group and especially their albums.

I'm not a big fan. City Boy blues from 'Theatre Of Pain' has a great riff and 'Wild Side' from 'Girls,Girls,Girls' is OK too. 'Shout At The Devil' deserves another listen as I last heard it years ago and thought it was badly produced sub par metal but my stance may have changed by now. I have a soft spot for a couple of Ratt albums even though I know they are cliched ridden claptrap!

i'm guilty of having written them off as nothing more than hair back in the day. then i started working with a (much younger) hardcore fan at my current job and we've listened to a few of their older albums and they're a notch above their peers (poison / warrant etc.) in my eyes.

it's not like they re-define rock music or anything like that but they mashed the glam, rock, and metal elements of their day into a very unique package. i'd put them on par with van halen overall.

reading The Dirt was actually quite insightful into the group as well, it's interesting to see how some of the members changed (nikki) while others are still come of as narcissistic as ever (tommy and vince). or in the case of mick mars just how out there he is hahaha.

i've also had 'kickstart my heart' stuck in my head for about 2 weeks now after hearing it on the radio during a road trip a while back hahaha

Some one told me a story a few months ago, about Vince Neil getting chased down Sunset Blvd. (I think) and getting beat up by the Misfits. It was years ago that it happened I was told.

Does anyone know how true this is? If so I feel sorry for Vince haha, the Misfits are all ****in huge!

Their first 2 albums are about as fun as music can get.

Glam rock mixed with punk rather than the crappy over-glossed radio friendly trash hair metal became later on.

I can already tell this thread is going to be lulzy in the worst way imagineable.

Dr. Feelgood was a great album. Kickstart My Heart and She Goes Down were standouts but pretty much every song on that album I can listen to.

Listened to their first album yesterday "Too Fast for Love" and as Urban said its largely a glam rock album infused with punk and as sleazy sounding as hell!!! In all fairness, its a rather average sounding affair and on a par with Ratt etc but in its favor it does have a level of consistency from start to finish and is probably better than I expected it to be. Best track is probably "Piece of Your Action" its probably the sleaziest sounding on there.

Today I`ll be listening to their second "Shout at the Devil"

Brother got right into Motley Crue when we both got into rock/metal/etc. I was listening to GNR and Metallica and just would not give them a chance because of the look of them. Early GNR was bad enough. These guys were too much. I finally got past it and have been a big Motley (and Nikki Sixx) fan ever since. The FEELGOOD album would have to be my favorite, GIRLS was pretty kickass too. The song "Girls Girls Girls" has one of the best riffs ever in my opinion.

One thing that keeps Motley from being a real favorite of mine is Vince Niel. I just don't respect the guy, and don't think he has any music ability at all. He doesn't write anything, can't play any instruments and is a terrible singer. He annoys the **** out of me, especially watching him live.

I am a huge Nikki Sixx fan and respect the hell out of him. I love his SIXX:AM album more than ANY Motley album. What a album.

I`ve just listened to their second album "Shout at the Devil" and despite all its negative criticism, actually enjoyed it even more so than their first album, best song was "Too Young to Fall in Love" and hey!!! there was even a Beatles cover on there in "Helter Skelter"

It seems that most Motley fans, state Dr.Feelgood to the group`s best.

Surprised you think that about Vince Neil`s voice, as I think his voice is perfectly suited to this type of sleazy, trashy glam metal style.

As for his writing ability, he seems to average about 25% contribution on each album so far.
