In metal about 467. 455 are sub genres of sub genres.

Pretty sure you could make a new genre for every metal band that comes along...which is what a lot of people do, BTW.

Without trying to sound like an old miserable git, I can say with great confidence that many of the sub genres invented for Metal are pure elitism and if you really delve deep into the whole Metal scene, you can easily drop the sub genres by 75 % and still be able to articulate a bands particular sound. The same is rife in Dance music. They are both such insular genres fan wise which is why they are both paradoxically massively popular and maligned by those outside.
