I would rather be elitist about many genres and not just one personally.

1. United Abominations - Megadeth
2. Rust In Peace - Megadeth 3. Ride the Lightening - Metallica 4. Houdini - Melvins 5. Inhaler - Tad Okay, 4 and 5 are grunge/metal. There's still metal in them. |
I was speaking in gest, however most musical snobs, and I do consider myself snobby at times, have the notion, that bands that are overly hyped and popular can in no way be good. It's basically a slight at the popular masses who consume music only because they think it's good based on WoM or sales totals, or chart rankings, but know very little in regards to the quality of music they're listening to. My point is that on occasion, over hyped bands like Opeth and Megadeth, actually deserve the props. I also consider, RIP one of the top three thrash records ever, but in this case...I ain't being elitist.

2. AC/DC - If You Want Blood 3. Ministry - Psalm 69 4. Life Of Agony - River Runs Red 5. Machine Head - Burn My Eyes |
1. Iron Maiden - Powerslave
This is one of the most prominent metal bands of all time, and this album found them in their prime. Personal Fav. 2. Black Sabbath - Paranoid Classic. 3. White Zombie - La Sexorcisto Devil Music Vol. 1 Great 90's metal, crunchy riffs, driving bass, ass kickin' drums, and Rob Zombie when he was still great. 4. Metallica - And Justice for All... Not my favorite band, and I certainly have ZERO respect for these induviduals, but this album is great. 5. Opeth - My arms, Your Hearse Great album that defines the metal sound of the time. |

Isn't that meant to be the best kind of metal though - that which disturbs one? You guys are making me intrigued, thats for sure!
|
Arranged alphabetically by artist, because if I tried to rank them I would never be able to decide:
Esoteric - The Maniacal Vale Meshuggah - Catch 33 Metallica - Master of Puppets Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood Tool - Lateralus Aside from MoP, which was the album that got me (and countless others) into metal and therefore enjoys a personal bias from me, my faves tend to focus more on the atmospheric, recent strains of metal, as opposed to the older, riffs-and-solos-oriented variants. |
This is in no particular order:
1. Deliverance - Opeth 2. City - Strapping Young Lad 3. The Arrival - Hypocrisy 4. The Politics of Ecstasy - Nevermore 5. Light of Day, Day of Darkness - Green Carnation |
|
1. Death - The Sounds of Perseverance (1998) / Individual Thought Patterns (1993)
2. Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors (2002) 3. Ensiferum (self-titled) (2001) 4. Quo Vadis - Defiant Imagination (2004) 5. Cradle of Filth - Cruelty and the Beast (1998) |
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Iron Maiden - Number of The Beast Judas Priest - Stained Glass Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell Metallica - Master of Puppets |

@Antonio,
Aside from the Pantera album, which I've yet to listen to, all the albums in your list are beyond amazing. Cynic progressive elements are inspiring, Between the Buried and Me's combination of cacophony and a more mellow sound makes it a very fun album and anything Mastodon does with their fluid experimental works is bound to amaze! |
IMO:
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden Sepultura - Schizophrenia Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Metallica - Master of Puppets Death Angel - The Ultraviolence For that pure nostaligia kick that takes me straight back...what an album Iron Maiden - Live After Death |
