Favorite EPs

What are your guys' favorite extended plays/EPs?

For me, it doesn't get much better than Tool's Opiate. Just a solid collection of 6 (7 if you count hidden tracks) heavy as **** songs. As much as I like Tool, Opiate might be my favorite CD of theirs.

OctaneHugo 05-16-2010 11:28 AM

I love In God We Trust, Inc. by Dead Kennedys. Every song is brilliant, lyrically and musically. The cover and the name are amazing as well.

I'll have to think a bit more, though, since I tend to just classify everything as a studio or a live album or a bootleg instead of as EPs or LPs.

Belle And Sebastian-Lazy Line Painter Jane

Alfred 05-16-2010 01:14 PM

Dillinger Escape Plan "Irony Is A Dead Scene"
Lagwagon "I Think My Older Brother Used To Listen To Lagwagon"
Genghis Tron "Cloak Of Love"
The Mars Volta "Tremulant"

all come to mind

The Clash-The Cost Of Living E.P.
The Clash-Black Market Clash

So many classic early Black Flag EPs, HORSE the Band too. Devo's Be Stiff is also great.

A few off the top of my head.

That's right, that's an EP. That's the harshest album NIN ever made and maybe the best. As unpopular as I'm going to seem with this next statement, I think With Teeth is deserving of contending for top NIN album.

sidewinder 05-17-2010 03:38 PM

I was right there with you about Broken possibly being the best NIN release, but With Teeth?! No. I like it more than some people do, but no way does it top Broken or even the first 2 albums IMO.

Violent & Funky 05-17-2010 04:15 PM

Modest Mouse has had a couple of nice EPs, Building Nothing Out of Something especially...

Agreed they have had some nice EPs, but Building Nothing Out of Something wasn't an EP, it was a compilation of non-album songs from various EPs and 7"s.

Right you are and my b. I tend to consider anything that isn't a LP or greatest hits to be an EP...

I just love every song on the A-Side of it :(

Downward Spiral is pretty good, but I feel like it loses itself sometimes. I haven't listened to it in a while, though, so I could definitely give that another listen. I really like Pretty Hate Machine as well, especially after listening to it again this weekend.

What do you think of the entire Year Zero project, ARG included? Personally I think it's one of the most brilliant musical related projects ever conceived.

Stinkfist 05-18-2010 03:58 AM

Tool - Opiate
Arctic Monkeys - Who The **** Are Arctic Monkeys?

James 05-18-2010 03:38 PM

Minuteflag-Minuteflag

A jam between Black Flag and The Minutemen so good.

The Minutemen have a ton of great EPs. One of their best songs is from an EP:

Janszoon 05-20-2010 05:32 AM

Two of my personal favorites from the past decade:

Jesu—Silver

TV on the Radio—Young Liars

I just downloaded Jesu's Silver EP because I keep hearing about them, but haven't heard them. Also, because you liked it. : D

Bulldog 05-20-2010 03:30 PM

I don't actually have many EPs (or at least so far as I can recall), but here are a couple of favourites that I've got stashed away somewhere...

Luke Haines - Leeds United

David Bowie - Baal

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-20-2010 04:08 PM

There's only one winner of this for me.

Why the fuck all the songs on this album were cut from Mellon Collie is beyond me... had some of them been included on the 2nd disk I might have actually liked it.

9 years later and I'm still left waiting for a goddamn follow up

I've actually never heard of that, which surprises me since I'm a pretty big KJ fan. When's it from?

rnrloser_IX 05-23-2010 07:05 AM

AC/DC's '74 Jailbreak. Everything from Jailbreak to Baby Please Don't Go has great singing and guitar work.

Its sort of a electronic remix of Turn to Red, not as good but kinda interesting. Its a rare ep but I'm sure you could find it for download on soulseek.

The funny thing is, that I listed because I mistakenly thought the original version of wardance was on it....I swear it was, at least on the version someone dubbed onto tape for me in the 90's, but in hindsight, they probably just threw it on.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to look for that!

The Clean - Boodle Boodle Boodle EP

I remember giving this quite a few listens, great stuff.
Favourite track would be Anything Could Happen.

Edit: I realise this might not fit in with the Rock & Metal sub forum, but oh well.

I was also intrigued by the Killing Joke EP, and found this release called The Malicious Singles on Amazon (mp3 only) that includes that EP and two other songs Wardance and Psyche. So it may be the dubbed tape Johnny_Rotter mentioned.

I grabbed the Almost Red EP from slsk though. Couldn't find The Malicious Singles.

No one has mentioned Jar of Flies by Alice in Chains. It's my favorite by them besides the Unplugged performance.

^ Good one.

Mojo 05-23-2010 03:58 PM

That jesu EP is great, by the way.

There are a few that come to mind.

The Raveonettes - Whip It On
Jurassic 5 EP
Jeff Buckley - Live From The Bataclan (with fantastic versions of Je N'en Connais Pas la Fin and The Way Young Lovers Do on it.)
Manic Street Preachers - New Art Riot.

Good call, and I'll have to include Sap.

Seconded.

And uh...

Suffocations "Human Waste" EP. One of my first experiences with the more extreme side of Metal, kinda got me hooked.

Plus, the artwork is just straight up badass.

Had my first listen the other night. Guilty of letting it fade into background news. I'll try again soon.

Alice In Chains - Jar Of Flies

BEST EP...EVER.

duga 06-13-2010 12:41 PM

Great EP, but my favorite will probably be:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg
Smashing Pumpkins - Lull

It has a few of my favorite SP tracks...Rhinoceros is on Gish, but works well with the other 3 tracks. Blue and Slunk are two intense rockers that are a great transition from the slick psychedelic sound of Gish to the ear pounding fuzz of Siamese Dream. Bye June is a leftover from their pre-Gish recording sessions, but is one of their most catchy and addicting acoustic numbers.

Halpert 06-13-2010 07:37 PM

Vivida Vis! - Against Me!
It's just Tom being angry which is when Against Me! is good.

Sljslj 06-13-2010 07:45 PM

Ugh, so many good ones. I guess I'll go with:
