He lasted 3 minutes?

Wow, If I owned a hat i'd take it off to him.

I doubt I could manage 30 seconds.

This. Except I'd apply it to over 90% of their material.

Like beckham is at taking freekicks, yeah he can take amazing freekicks and passing, but he does tooo many technical passing and ****s it up once to often because he tries to be too precise. Sometimes precision makes for bad watching. E.g Dream theatre, they are far too precise about their music. They doin't let it flow, they don't feeling and passion overide it. IMO, The best metal band of teh era has to Maiden, because they are all feeling, all passiona nd have the most recognisable sound out of any metal band. Not only that but they have stood the test of time. maiden are hugely popular because unlike Dream Theatre, they let emotion make their music. Imagine seeing Dream Theatre live, wouldn't that be just boring?? Or you could see Maiden live?? Which one would most people prefer, teh precise, technically live or the oveririding passion, and emotion of a true metal band live??

while this almost impenetrable wall of text is a, well... an almost impenetrable wall of text, i highly agree with what you said up until the Iron Maiden part.

Dream Theater is NOT the greatest anything ever. they ARE exceptionally talented musicians who push themselves to their limits. unfortunately that means their music normally ends up sounding like the results of a sterilized laboratory experiment. there's no room for error, there are no bum notes, no accidental scrapes or scratches on the strings, no slurred chord leading into a riff. ultimately, no reflection of the flaws that make the individual humans of the band unique.

they are not as horrible as the average hipster makes them out to be, the vocalist doesn't always immediately make one want to stab themselves in the ears. in fact, he kind of sounds like james hetfield at times, but he's still the weakest link in the group.

i don't think there's any lack of emotion that goes into the creation of their music, but during the process of refining their music the emotion is neutered and replaced with calculated ability.

Wow. I was wondering why I had never seen this thread before. It's five ****in' years old. Yes. We all know that Dream Theater is not the greatest band ever. James LaBrie is a cheesy-ass nigga.

i thought this thread was a sarcastic joke of itself before actually heading in here.

As someone who appreciates most genres i'd have to agree that Dream Theater are amazing musicians ... Mike Portnoy is one of my favourite drummers, John Myung is still my favourite bassist yet they are far from the best METAL band ever ...

They are calculated musicians, brilliant yes but that degree of brilliance leads to a sense of despondence when listening to their music .... that and i never liked the vocalist

I think that anyone who truly understands music would appreciate their technicality but would also understand that being as technical as hell is not all that ... sometimes simpler is better - a concept Dream Theatre never has adopted and one that possibly has cost them dearly ...

DT are extremely boring and cheesy. That's it. Come on, they have nothing progressive or art-ish in their tracks.
