Black Metal Recommendations.
I was wondering if anyone in the forum was much into Black Metal, I can't say I've really ever enjoyed the genre (Dimmu Borgir, Burzum, Mayhem and Emperor are some of the bands I've heard) however I've always been fascinated by the scene and mystique surrounding it, so I was wondering if anyone hear could recommend me some Black Metal which has substance to it.
|
Most black metal has substance.. to an extent. Most black metal's aim is create some type of atmosphere and while I can say that I used to think that was a rather lame and stupid concept I see it much more now that I have gotten into black metal a lot more than I was at one time. Anyway, I suggest starting out with Dissection's Storm of the Light's Bane. Its a true classic, but it's not purely black metal. It's also really death metal influenced and may be the band that can break the band and slowly allow you to get into other black metal bands. Good luck.

Darkthrone is a great band to start with. They're not as kvlt as some of their peers, in fact they make fun of those tr00 believers in their recent series of crust punk/heavy metal albums beginning w/FOAD (**** Off And Die). Begin w/ "A Blaze In The Northern Sky".
|
Yeah, Darkthrone is a good place to start. The first band I heard was Mayhem, so they wouldn't be bad to start off with either.
|
|
I second
Negura Bunget also Wolves in the Throne Room and Velvet Cacoon |
Damn it I totally forgot about Wolves in the Throne Room. I also would say some Arckanum.
|
Arcturus are an awesome band, they mix alot of different elements from Black Metal, Symphonic Metal and Progressive Metal. The result of this is absolutely incredible. I should say that not all of their stuff sounds like Black Metal at all, some has nothing in common with Black Metal at all.
|
Thanks guys! I'll be sure to check out some of this stuff. I recently downloaded Enslaved's 'Eld' having heard that it was a cross between Black Metal and when they started to get more progressive. '793' was definitely the best track on the album.
|
Enslaved are a really special band.
|
i'm checking out Emperor
|
Dissection sounded much more Death metal than Black metal to me, however I still enjoyed the album. Negura Bunget's 'Om' is impressing me immensely.
|
Yeah they are a good blend of death metal and black metal. I think they are perfect for getting into black metal if you're already a death metal fan. So I think they are one of those bands that can really break the ice.
|
Another one thats good if you like death metal is Old Man's Child. They have a lot of death metal riffs in their songs.
|
Three bands I'd highly recommend:
Limbonic Art Naglfar Nokturnal Mortum I got into an asian black metal group a while ago called "SIGH", they're not too bad and one I've been meaning to check out is "Aurora Borealis". Anyone heard them? Recommendations as to where to start would be great. |
just got Emperor'ss debut
pagan good times! |
how do you not like Dimmu Borgir? :(
|
^^i don't like 'em much, but still checking out Skeletons in the Closet, anyway
edit - oops, that's Children of Bodom |
Why all this emphasis on melodic black metal? People seem to forget that there were many great bands in the West playing black metal in the late 80s; Sarco***o, Blasphemy, Order from Chaos etc. all deserve far more praise than they get.
Here's some great non-melodic black metal albums: (artist - album - youtube link) Blasphemy - Gods of War http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKrxMS9aoNI Sarco***o - INRI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v==KRVb4r3_6o Angel Corpse - Hammer of the Gods http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZY5t_EezZY Black Witchery - Desecration of the Holy Kingdom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4Fw5TfV6fs |

hhbh, here's something from the rougher side from Brazil Encyclopaedia Metallum - GoatPenis |
about to check out Burzum
|
Some of the better bands that I have taken a liking to:
Aaskeria Agalloch Altar Of Plagues Bak De Syv Fjell Cobalt Darkthrone Drudkh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fen Gallowbraid Gehenna Sigh Velvet Cacoon Vidsyn WITTR |
I don't know, I really used to dig them, but now I kind of consider it a bit of a joke, I mean, these guys are fully grown men wearing corpse paint and screaming about satan. That's ok for a teenage garage band, but at what point does it become a joke? And I just think it sounds really manufactured too, a bit over-produced for that typical Black Metal sound.

If they can play their instruments well everything else falls into place/

I really wanted to find something similar to this. I fell in love with this entire album, and this track seems has elements industrial/noise/black metal. Although, I can't really say for sure what it is. |

But, you can always open a journal with reviews and stuff, or a top [insert number] list, like your own thread, where you can give recommendations and mini reviews and such. Here on MB, of course. |

what i meant is there is not a specific section for black metal. :D get the owner to open one and i will flood mb with much grimmy goodness! |
tack pat. im always seeking new black metal. its ams my passions! :D
yeah ill start a journal in a bit. why not right? |
Sorry to be picky, but... is there any ambient black metal that doesn't talk about suicide, killing others, or Satan?

Swiss guy, takes alot of influence musically from Burzum, but his lyrics are almost exclusively about winter. |

Anyways, one of my biggest problems with Black Metal is that the way a song sounds is so goddamned dependent on the recording and setting. I saw the Order from Chaos reunion show, and it was fantastic - but the entire time I sat there mind****ed as not only was the bass clearly audible, the lower end dominated. Same with how songs transform so radically from one recording to a next. Oh... and in the words of Sarco***o, **** off the Melodic Black Metal! |
Temnozor is a pretty good band. I quite like Blut aus nord and deathspell omega too.:bonkhead:
