Default Down-nola

I recently watched Diary of a Mad Band- the newest live DVD from Phil Anselmo's band Down. I had all their albums but hadn't listened to them for awhile as I was checking out other genres and such. But now that I've returned and listened through them I am completely blown away. This band is ****ing amazing, the sludgy riffs coupled with the bluesy vocals with the swamp/stoner rock aesthetic is something rarely found in the realm of metal. I'm curious as to how the community feels about them. Post your thoughts!

I gave it a listen as the description appealed but I found it very average. I was hoping for something along the lines of the band Mother Tongue but this was rather tame and nowhere near as dirty as I thought

If it was like this then I am up and listening:

I apologize if this is too far off-topic but I think Down's got nothing on Superjoint Ritual. Fuck Your Enemy ..

NOLA was the only thing Down ever got right. Probably the only thing I enjoy from Phil Anselmo.

You didn't enjoy Down III, BastardofYoung? Some people saw Down II as a misstep but I found Down III to be huge leap forward for the band, a much more refined and mature sound. Superjoint Ritual is pretty cool, but I'm not that into hardcore.

Jackhammer, the link you posted sounded like a blues rock/funk hybrid. It's dope, don't get me wrong but not close to what Down sounds like. I'd recommend another non-single song but there's so many I can't pick. Just browse through youtube if you really want to haha

I`m pretty much a big fan of anything done by Phil Anselmo and love Down and their southern metal influenced sludge metal sound sees them as forerunners of the genre. I think their best release is Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow.

As Engine said above, Superjoint Ritual are even better and the album "Use Once and Destroy" is one of the best metal albums of the 00`s with its high octane thrash sound.

Phil is alright. But he has had some god awful bands over the years as well. Viking Crown is hilariously awful.

I'm pretty sure it was a light hearted venture into the realm of black metal for Phil...and if i'm not mistaken I think his wife was in the band with him?
