Anyone like Kalmah? They're often grouped with Children of Bodom, which is ridiculous because these guys are badass as fuck, and a lot more melodic.

Wow, listening to this album after a long time... still love it. Like the Swedish Autopsy.

Has anyone mentioned "Obscura" by Gorguts in this thread yet? Admittedly, I know little of music theory but from what I read prior to listening was that the album was one of the most forward thinking in the realm of death metal. After listening, I found that the reviews didn't disappoint. The drumming was top notch had much more to offer than just mindless 250 bpm blast beats and the guitar acrobatics were at times just jaw dropping. Make no mistake about it, it's definitely a challenging listen but if you're into BTBAM or extreme tempo shifts or anything like that I'd highly recommend this album.

Enjoy.

Are there any specific advantages to having something on vinyl other than for nostalgic purposes? I honestly don't know (showing my age here).

Vinyl is a at least to my ears a more clean sounding recording. Analog compared to digital. Many albums I have heard on vinyl and CD... the vnyl just sounds more natural to me.

Kalmah have some great melodies and wonderful crescendos; and, despite being melodic, the songs aren't saccharine or overly predictable. I really enjoy listening to them. My major problem is the goddamn keyboard; the ony doesn't fit the music. It enhances the music to an extent, but also draws away...... granted, i don't think any band has yet to really figure out the proper tone for keyboards.

Gorguts; are a great band. I think "Considered Dead" is their best, though. Yes, yes - Obscure is awfully technical, but that doesn't get much mileage to my redneck self. I'd rather listen to Demilich's "Nespithe" - that's an album done in a similar theme, and I think the songs are much better.

That really is a great album. All three albums I own by Gorguts (Obscura, The Erosion of Sanity, From Wisdom to Hate) are pretty fantastic really.
