It seems like it randomly happens now and again, but isn't this seen as free advertising the artist concerned?

Also most of those older bands were more hard rock than metal anyway.

In fact my journal is currently focusing on this time period of the early 1970s at the moment. Just click the link at the bottom of this post "Pounding Decibels"

Yeah, after giving it more thought over the last day or so I did think of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath as probable for that OWOBHM, but thanks for clearing that up.

As for this thread? It's pretty awesome. I never knew that so many "Satanic" leaning bands were part of the catagory. Learned about a lot of stuff here, thank you for the read!

The satanic aspect is there of course in some bands, but I would say the majority of the bands from the NWOBHM were more influenced by the hard rock style of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple etc than they were by Black Sabbath. The heavier Satanic influences would come later, when metal got more agressive and sought out a stronger identity in the mid 1980s with bands like Slayer and Celtic Frost. When that happened, Black Sabbath and the satanic aspect gained a much firmer footing on how metal was seen.

Yeah, but don't forget Venom. They were a crucial part of the heavier/messier/louder side of the NWOBHM, and certainly gave rise to a lot of the later black metal bands. Hell, they coined the phrase, didn't they? (Why isn't there a devil icon??)

I thought you didn't like Venom?
