Dang sad to see that MB doesn't take too kindly to Frusciante.

New to the forum so just checking in on the artists I'm listening to right now

i honestly think frusciante is the best guitarist of the modern era, there are alot of great guitarists nowadays that take music pretty far in one direction or another but i think frusciante is a master. technical ability opens doors but i dont like it when music sounds overly robotic or textbook, frusciante is a good balance of ability and expression

omar rodriguez-lopez is still my favorite though (more my style, against the grain), they did an album together which wasnt too impressive, i like them better with their respective bands. john frusciantes solo stuff is almost too experimental for me, and i listen mostly to prog so thats saying alot

That 2nd clip you posted, the one with 'how is it better than this?' has been removed from youtube. What was it? Just curious to know what compared to My Smile is a Rifle.

Also from that first album, Your Pussy is Glued to a Building on Fire is the same vocal melody as Elton John's Tiny Dancer (a shortened version of the tune would sometimes get played during live RHCP shows around 1990). Lifting from Sabbath is something he's been open with about in the past as well. Listen closely to the end of Give it Away (when it gets heavy) then Sweet Leaf.

Frusciante may be one of the modern guitar 'greats' but ultimately he's a Hendrix clone through and through. If anything it's his songwriting and production skills that really distinguish him.

That first album 'Niandra Ladies and Usually Just a T-Shirt' shouldn't be used as a proper indication of his abilities either. I'm pretty sure he's openly acknowledged the less than awesome aspects of the recording, then again the bulk of it was either recorded or cleared for release regardless of quality during the darkest days of his heroin addiction after having quit the Chili Peppers as they hit their first peak of major worldwide success.

So how about what he sounds like with a bit more sobriety?

I'm a fan of frusciante. I think some of his stuff is really great. The guitar playing in "I could have lied" is pretty awesome. He's a disciple of Hendrix, I wouldn't say he's exactly a clone, but you can definitely hear the Hendrix sound in a lot of his stuff.

Frusciante seemed too good for the Red hot Chilli Peppers, but he isn't.

That's pretty true, a lot of his stuff is similar to Hendrix's. Take his playing on "Snow (Hey Oh)", for example.



That isn't just an emulation of Hendrix, that main riff sounds like he directly took that straight from Hendrix and took out a lot of the nuances and offshoots to make it somewhat repetitive.

I'm really surprised about some people on here! There is such a wealth of quality in John's back catalogue, if you really want to give him a fair try check out his 'Curtains' album and then his 'Empyrean' album.

The Chili Peppers are my favorite band. Frusciante is a god when it comes to guitar. He can sing pretty well, does good harmonies with Anthony. I'm not so into his solo stuff; I find it kind of boring. But, he's John, so I can't really say anything bad about him.
