Of all those named I prefer AIC. I think they are the obvious choice other than Soundgarden.

Well considering the band has 5 platinum albums to their credit, including their '09 release, so I'd say they've achieved greatness and recognition while still remaining relevant.

As far as cross-genre appeal goes I've met plenty of different people who enjoy their music. You have diehard metalheads who dig them as evidenced by their appearance on the Clash of the Titans Tour back in '92 with the big four. Also, you have your alt rock fans who are into them because of the intense melody in their music, primarily the vocal harmonies between Staley and Cantrell. Sure, you're going to have the run of the mill radio rock listener who enjoys AIC, but I'd say it's better that they go buy an Alice record instead of the new Nickelback or something.

A ton of metal fans, myself included love Alice In Chains and aren’t fans of your typical stadium rock bands. I listen to everything from black metal to thrash metal to neofolk to dream-pop to punk but hardly any “stadium rock.” I don’t know another band that can go from creating acoustic albums to hardrock/heavy metal material so flawlessly.
A very dynamic band with a fairly dynamic fan base.
Though I admit it’s a real shame they influenced Godsmack, Staind etc.

Alternative rock and metal = cross genre appeal.
Like I said quite a dynamic fanbase and sound especially when taking the full out acoustic albums into consideration.

False. I’m neither, same with a lot of people I know. I don't listen to much "stadium rock", more of a metal, folk, punk, dream pop kind of guy.

False. I have bought each album because of it's greatness. And just look at their album sales, awards etc.. Isn't that impact on the world of music??
What about the metal bands they've influenced??

Is that a generalisation? That's funny because I'm a big Pumpkins fan and I listen to black and death metal occasionally, and I know a few other Pumpkins fans that do similar. Hell I've even seen a guy wearing a Napalm Death t-shirt at a Smashing Pumpkins gig.
