Who is the ultimate black metal band?

I thought i'd create this thread mainly just to see how many black metal fans there are here.

I like many black metal bands((metal in general!))
But most would agree that black metal is definetly the most diverse of extreme music.

My fave is probably: Dimmu Borgir
Whays yours??

A_Tribe_Called_Quest 05-01-2005 08:23 AM

mave black/death metal band is Dimmu Borgir.
reason, Dimmu Borgir besides being really heavy they have an orchestra playing in some of their stuff, not always a full orchestra but harps and pianos and all that stuff. They mix heavy with calm and it sounds f666ing nice. Check out Mourning Palace and Perfectiopn or Vanity and you'll see what i mean. The drumming is prety sweet to.

itchytasty 05-01-2005 03:16 PM

neither Children of Bodom nor Cannibal Corpse are black metal...

i don't care for most black metal, and i'd have to say that Emperor is my favorite.

rock_on_dude 05-01-2005 04:04 PM

burzum r a godd black metal band

DIMMU ARE BLACK METAL AS ARE MAYHEM.
I met the guys from Mayhem on there Australian tour with the band I roadie for (Chalice) and they said they considered Dimmu Borgir as well as themselves black metal. The Mayhem boys are really nice guys funnily enough :) lol

The Drunken Terd 05-02-2005 12:15 PM

Devil Driver (although they aren't really black metal) THis band is sweet I have their self titled album and the next 1 looks sweet. Listening to "Hold Back the Day" from their newest Cd wich hasn't been released yet, I think it hasn't.

TheBig3 05-02-2005 12:53 PM

Living Color

riseagainstrocks 05-02-2005 03:26 PM

Dimmu Borgir isn't black metal. and I guess i should clarify. the only original member of Mayhem still in the band is Hellhammer the drummer. They've changed too.

Black Metal uses inverted power chords, a complete lack of melody, and utterly blasphemous lyrics. Dimmu Borgir fulfills one of those criteria. if anything DB can be considered a cross between Death Metal and Industrial. I like some of the string arrangements but can't stand the voice nor the lyrics (not that you can hear them anyway)

For your information most modern black metal bands do have a extreme amount of melody.
It's kind of half of what black metal is.
Whether it's Guitar solos,Keyboards, flutes,String arrangements or a good ole symphony in the mix.
(Even Mayhem have melodies!!!)lol :band:

riseagainstrocks 05-03-2005 09:33 AM

Its not Black Metal than. sorta like old emo to new emo. Dimmu Borgir are Death Metal. Venom is Black Metal.
Burzum is Black Metal

Wyldchild 05-03-2005 12:01 PM

Burzum are melodic as!!
What the hell are you talking about Black metal's all about melody, brutality and normaly dark, or gothic themes.
Even Venom had that stuff. :yikes:

riseagainstrocks 05-03-2005 02:12 PM

You are not listening to Black Metal than if it had melody.

Venom's album "Black Metal" contained nothing that could be considered melody.

Dimmu Borigr doesn't play inverted power chords therefore = not Black Metal.

face it.

Necro Joe 05-03-2005 02:22 PM

^ There is just as much melody in black metal as in any other style of metal, though bad production does occasionally make it hard to hear.

Immortal, Dissection, Enslaved, Mercyful fate, Sacramentum and Burzum are my favourites.

Emperor are mostly excellent even if their newer albums often come off as too ambitious for their own good.

TheBig3 05-03-2005 02:56 PM

/\ kick ass name

So wait, inverted power chords and no melody= black metal?

Necro Joe 05-03-2005 03:08 PM

Venom are widely accepted not even to be BM anyway so I'm not sure how far you can trust what he says.

And you're name's pretty cool as well, I don't suppose RainDog is a Tom Waits reference?

riseagainstrocks 05-03-2005 04:28 PM

Venom are the ones who gave the genre its name.

and yes Big3.

Cannibal Corpse.
Cenotaph.
Cradle of Filth.
Cryptopsy.
Deicide.
Dimmu Borgir.
Immortal.
Kreator.
Mayhem.
Medagh.
Morbid Angel.
Opeth.
Satyricon.

for some reason, i never bothered with Gorgoroth or Burzum. but Satyricon is so far my favorite.

Yeah, I thought Dimmu Borgir were death metal too.
So many sub-genres though it gets me confused.
Rise Against, by "inverted" power chords do you mean the minor scale chords, not the majors?

I TAKE IT YOU CANT PLAY ANYTHING BY DIMMU BORGIR?!?!?
DIMMU USE HEAPS OF CHORDS DUDE.
YOU REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT YA TALKING ABOUT DO YOU.lol
THEY OF COURSE USE INVERTED POWER CHORDS
AS MOST BLACK METAL BANDS DO.
VENOM ARE ONE OF MANY.
ALSO IF VENOM WERE MODERN DAY BAND THEY WOULDN'T BE CALLED BLACK METAL. LOL
SO THERE YOU GO MATE.

riseagainstrocks 05-05-2005 01:59 PM

Chords aren't whats an issue. Do you play guitar? and I haven't memorized any Dimmu Borgir songs but the ones i bothered to look up didn't contain any. I'm not great at guitar (don't get me wrong they aren't bad musicians) so I doubt I could play just by looking.

Snickers by inverted i mean

standard
----
----
----
-3-3
-3-3
-1-1

inverted
----
----
----
-1-1
-3-3
-3-3

hard to explain online but that should.

and wyldchild. i'm confused by your last 2 lines...

i can see where you're coming with Opeth, in some of their earlier albums they have a black-ish tinge too them... but not really with Deicide at all...

they have added more melodic (almost synonymous with radio-friendly in metal) elements, with recent albums, to their music. in essence what you have is a watered-down form black metal. black metal was never intended to be listener friendly, really. kinda like what happened to punk/hardcore.

...do you know what an inverted power chord is?

riseagainstrocks 05-05-2005 02:34 PM

who are you refering to?

itchytasty 05-05-2005 06:02 PM

Wyld. while i was typing my computer ****ed up so i wasn't able to get through for a while.
