Except for the fact that the last half of the album is pretty mediocre. A lot of bands have fallen into the "Put all your good songs on the first half of the album and fill the rest with filler and hope nobody notices" trap, but Pantera like to live in there.

Somebody needs to grow you a new set of ears.

Don't get me wrong, I like Pantera, I've just sorta grown out of them. They were a gateway metal band for me.

Yeah, I am in the same boat to be honest. I think Pantera is actually dreadful.. but I still like that song and the majority of the album it is from.

But 99% of their output does not appeal to me anymore.

Howard the Duck 02-21-2012 05:22 AM

f*ck double posting, i'm putting it all here:-

Hammerfall - Glory to the Brave (Deluxe), Threshold, No Sacrifice No Victory and Infected
Stratovarius - s/t
Arch Enemy - Rise of the Tyrant
Soilwork - A Predator's Portrait

bought the CD/DVD release today, one of the essentials in the genre, so figured I would buy it.

I haven't done it yet but I'm on the verge of purchasing Botanist's double album:
The Suicide Tree/A Rose From the Dead

I keep listening to it so I guess I like it and I'm a sucker for beautiful artwork on metal album covers.

Blarobbarg 02-21-2012 10:42 PM

Botanist is the only one making black metal completely focused on plants. I have to salute him for that.

Agalloch - The Mantle. Had to import it from the U.S though but only cost £7.00 with free P&P. Happy days.

Sodom - Agent Orange and Code Red are highly recommended.

Amorphis - I prefer their later stuff. Skyforger is excellent.

Howard the Duck 03-01-2012 06:10 PM

already have Agent Orange

will check out the others

BastardofYoung 03-02-2012 01:59 AM

Amorphis are a band of many musical faces, I think it really depends on which style you first want to get into.

i want to know what cover is that as well

I thought it was Stormtroopers of Death but it really could be any extreme metal band. It also reminded me of the 1980s 2000AD artwork, I say that, because I've just started buying the Judge Dredd Complete Case Files to read:finger: it it reminded me of that style.

though I only like the pre-90s stuff with Strontium Dog, Zenith, Nemesis the Warlock and Rogue Trooper

picked up some new issues recently and not liked it much

Only Voivod album I own, and for the longest time it made me avoid Voivod like the plague. It sounds like someone asked themselves "I wonder what Motorhead would sound like if they couldn't hold a tune in a bucket?" I've given it chance after chance, and it never ceases to blow.

BastardofYoung 03-02-2012 01:55 PM

Yeah, not my favorite Voivod album by any means (that would be Dimension Hatross), but when I see something good at HMV, I have to get it, lol.

They had this as well, was thinking of picking it up, but they wanted $21.99 and I can get it on the ALternative Tentacles website for only $12.

I gotta say, the only good thing about early Voivod is the artwork. But it's some awesome artwork.

LedSabbath 03-03-2012 03:30 PM

I don't understand it myself, but I have been on somewhat of an extreme kick lately.
Recent purchases include: Asphyx: Deathhammer and Death the Brutal Way
Grave: Burial Ground, Fiendish Regression and Hating Life
Sabbath: Sabatage
Obiturary: Frozen in Time and Return of the Executioner
Vallenfyre: Fragile King
Entombed: Inferno and Serpant Saints

BastardofYoung 03-03-2012 03:43 PM

some great ones there... though I remember that Obituary records (Return of...) being pretty mediocre.

BastardofYoung 03-04-2012 05:08 PM

Picked these up today at second hand store:

I can not complement you enough for picking up Order from Chaos. Wonderful band, and as many good bands have come out of it, notably Ares Kingdom & Angelcorpse, I think OfC is superior.

In regards to Vital Remains; the only album I've of them is Dechristianize, which is both very silly and very fun. How does that album compare?

BastardofYoung 03-06-2012 08:23 PM

meh, that Vital Remains album is not that great. Has a few alright moments here and there, but I would say it is for completists only.

Kinda fits into the same trap as much of their early stuff, long songs... which can be good, if the ideas you present are progressive enough to keep the song going for so long... but I find with them, it just kinda goes and goes without much of a pay off.

LandOfImmortals4 03-08-2012 06:00 AM

Albums I've bought over the past few weeks:

Rhapsody Of Fire - The Cold Embrace Of Fear
Stratovarius - Elysium (I heard Under Flaming Skies but that was pretty much it, I was surprised by the rest of the album. Loved it.
Saxon - A Collection Of Metal (This was good, though the lack of Heavy Metal Thunder made me sad. :P)
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (This is the first Black Sabbath album I've bought, I hadn't really listened to any of their songs ((except Iron Man)), but this has made compelled to get more of their albums.)

The Batlord 03-08-2012 08:21 AM

^^^

**** yeah on everything you bought!

And we need more people to talk about Saxon. One of the bands that got me into heavy metal. I feel you on "Heavy Metal Thunder". Easily one of their best songs. Strong Arm of the Law was a beast of an album.

Totally agreeing with you about Saxon, they're a great band but quite underrated. :/
