During the 1980s, several thrash metal bands formed a prototype for black metal. This so-called "first wave" included bands such as Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer and Celtic Frost.[1] A "second wave" arose in the early 1990s, spearheaded by Norwegian bands such as Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal and Emperor. The music of the early Norwegian black metal scene became a distinct genre.
Black metal has often been met with hostility from mainstream culture, mainly due to the misanthropic and anti-Christian standpoint of many artists. Moreover, several of the genre's pioneers have been linked with church burnings and murder. For these reasons and others, black metal is usually seen as an underground form of music. Additionally some have been linked to neo-Nazism, however most black metal fans and most prominent black metal musicians reject Nazi ideology and oppose its influence on the black metal subculture.[2][3][4][5]

The genre began in the early/mid-80s as an offshoot of the popular Heavy Metal style emerging in Britain during this time, with bands (most notably, Venom with their extremely important Black Metal album in 1982, which most people consider the beginning of the term itself) from this area utilizing powerful occult imagery and a rawer, more stripped-down sound than was usual for typical bands of the times, but other factions of influential bands occurred sporadically in other countries in Europe, including Switzerland, where Hellhammer were concocting their own sinister combination of (what would come to be known as) Black/Doom Metal/Death/Thrash Metal, possibly one of the world's first "extreme Metal" bands (a term for Metal that is not overtly/intentionally melodic in a traditional sense). Over time, the influences culminated in Norway and the other Scandinavian countries where "Black Metal" would come into its own and develop a following greater than when it was in its embryonic stages. It was in Norway and Sweden, with bands the likes of Mayhem, Bathory and Burzum, where Black Metal originated its "northern", cold, isolated sounds which became a staple sound of the "second wave" which extended until around the mid-90s.

Modern Black Metal has diverged quite a bit from its original path. Some see this as evolution and others as regression or even a falling-out from Black Metal totally. The genre is very much a worldwide phenomenon currently, with prominent acts located in Germany, France, Poland, Russia and even the United States (much to the apparent dismay of many fans of the "original" Black Metal which was decidedly European). Sub-styles of Black Metal have very recently been designed around expanding the aesthetic of the genre into Industrial, Psychedelic Rock, Ambient, or Folk sectors of music.

I complete reject the notion that Black Metal crystallized in Scandinavia.

NME, "Unholy Death", 1986

Sarco***o, "INRI", 1987

Order From Chaos, "Crushed Infamy" (Demo), 1989

Blasphemy, "Fallen Angel of Doom", 1990

Havohej, "Dethrone the Son of God", 1993

etc.

Norsecore =/= Black Metal. There existed, prior to that, a separate sound, and this sound continues to exist today in bands such as Black Witchery & Revenge.

CanwllCorfe 02-12-2012 04:16 PM

Did I forget Sortsind? Goddamn it I forgot Sortsind.

Howard the Duck 02-12-2012 10:22 PM

Yeah it's a shame he's not doing metal anymore.

When it comes to black metal I like mine as gritty as possible.

Maylasia, Vietnam who cares? It was all ruled by the French anyway? :p:

^^^ Malaysia was colonized by the British. French Indochina = Laos, Vietnam, & Cambodia.

Anyways, screw this boring black metal. Here's some fast & chaotic black metal:

^^^ this rip sucks, but it gets the point across. Black Metal with influences from early grindcore. Really fun stuff.

Eh, I guess I'm more excited by the boring variety. Here's some more Xasthur for ya. Doing his thing live.

Euronomus 02-14-2012 03:11 PM

So, time to bring this argument here - does this count as black metal?

I'll leave that question to the experts.
Personally speaking, both of those songs are very good and I'ma get me some Botanist asap.

That... is the oddest version of black metal I think I've ever heard.

And I have to say, I would really enjoy it, if only it were instrumental. His vocals ruin the songs. :/

Sneer 02-15-2012 01:16 AM

Loads of great bands listed already, here's a couple more I like:

hip hop bunny hop 02-18-2012 01:34 PM

Euronomus, I think I may like that band. Thank you for posting them here.

The only boring black metal I can stand is Burzum and a handful of his clones, notably Drudkh lately.

^^^ this song begins in a manner similar to that of the film "Brick".

Engine 02-19-2012 12:32 PM

I've decided that Botanist is a very lovable band.
One flora-worshipper making songs out of vocals, drums, and a hammered-dulcimer. Awesome. I hadn't even noticed from the songs posted that there are no guitars (and no synth).
He's got a double-album with about 40 short tracks, and the shit never gets boring.

Here's the guy doing an interview with NPR.

Hip Hop Bunny Hop knows his stuff. Though I’m a fan of a lot of the early nineties Norweigan classics but by no means were they the first to create bm as other scenes were developing in other parts of the world as well. Euronymous himself also stated what a big influence acts like Sarco***o and N.M.E were…

Anyways here’s a few more goodies of earlier releases that were ahead of their time…

Epic Czech bm. There’s use of keyboards here but they use them wisely and at the right time.

More weird, thrashy bm madness from Czechs..

Although this video is from ’92 from the “Into the Drape” EP Italian occultists Mortuary Drape had been releasing demos since the mid 80’s.

Tsk tsk… I see no ones posted Bathory yet…

I’ll post some Polish bm vids a little later when I have time as I’ve always felt that this scene was incredibly underrated during the nineties…

It was considered as unnecessary as posting Nirvana in a grunge thread. Everyone who's anyone knows that Bathory are the greatest black metal band ever.

Travis_Bickle 03-23-2012 10:04 PM

What about bm newbies or other posters who haven’t had the chance to hear the sheer mastery of that song?

Anyhoo, I’ve always been a big fan of Polish bm, perhaps because members (guys like Rob Darken and Capricornus) are often involved with multiple groups. Graveland, Capricornus, Veles, Fullmoon, Infernum, early Behemoth, Ohtar, Dark Fury, Thor’s Hammer, Infernal War, Gontyna Kry, Lord of Evil/War 88 etc. are all decent.

I have more purchased releases of Graveland than any other artist in my music collection. I’m a big fan of both the raw, primitiveness of the early stuff and the newer Hammerheart-like sound but my favourite album is probably their transitional “Following the Voice of Blood”..

Melodic and majestic, yet raw and nasty bm. The Graveland influence is quite obvious here.

A shame only one full length was ever released, one of my favourite bm vocalists ever.

Infernal War have a different take going for a more directly chaotic, militant, punishing sound not that far away from an artist like Ad Hominem.

Fullmoon were also pretty great and took lots of influence from Graveland’s barbaric and almost medieval-ish sound. Forget the silly name, ‘United Aryan Evil’ is among the best demos of all time.

Great song, but I think this one is superior. Bathory's first album is pretty much the greatest thing any black metal band ever did.

I see you mentioned Marduk. Definitely a solid black metal band.

I'd also like to mention Naglfar if they haven't been mentioned already.
