Well if you insist. The early Hollies discography is just the typical British beat pop typical of that time, where a number of bands jumped on the Beatles bandwagon, they also had far too much covers stuff on those albums to really attract me. Their most interesting period was their psycehedlic period which started around 1967 and the album Evolution is a good album and probably the peak of their output. Again they were following in the footsteps of the Beatles, Beach Boys and the Byrds in going psychedelic here. As for the later stuff, I wouldn't bother with as Graham Nash had left the band. In hindsight the Hollies are a band that people seem to get all nostalgic over, but the reality is that they were somewhat limited. The biggest Hollies fan on here seems to be Il Duce, so hopefully he can recommend you some stuff.

distant light has some really good tunes also..recorded in 1971..

Hopefully you guys can help me out with this one.. I am looking to buy my first Rolling Stones album but I don't particularly know where is the best place to begin. I was thinking Beggars Banquet. Any suggestions?

Sticky fingers was my first I sat down and really went through, but really.. start from the beginning because you need to start at the roots, which in this case are blonde. Brian jones must not be skipped over ! Plus there are so many good early songs, walking the dog, pain in my heart, heart of stone, mercy mercy (actually the whole out of our heads album is genius) & you get my point. See the evolution, experience it for yourself [in order] just as those who got to live it;)

^ Alternatively, you could take a shortcut through the early years and get the compilation album, Big Hits: High Tide and Green Grass. That album has all the early singles on it.

Maybe to whet ones appetite, but as a Stones fan I would recommend going through their early albums.

^ I guess you're more of an early Stones fan than me then, Neapolitan.

Here's a rather forgotten album of instrumental harmonica rock. I don't know how much attention it received outside the UK, but in Britain it spawned a one-hit-wonder single that did surprisingly well. Surprising, because without a vocalist, and with a very anonymous album cover, this release rather lacked that kind of human interest that even the worst frontman in the world can generate. The result is quite a solid album that, afaik, was destined - or designed - to be considered of the second rank.

Not so much a recommendation because I only heard of them 10 mins ago. So this is more of a "What are you listening to right now ?", but we don't have a thread of that for old rock, do we?
Anyway: Count Five (Canadian band) had a hit with Psychotic Reaction - way back in 1966, but it still packs a punch:-
