10 years on

There are some bands that survive when the momentum of the movement that spawned them dies out, In our life times we've seen the chilli peppers, pearl jam, tool and green day survived a fad that killed hundreds of lesser bands. Even the great old acts never die as you can still see Skynard, Sabbath, The Doors, Queen and the Eagles if you have large enough pockets (not so much in Skynards case, you just need a ticket to the county fair) but the post grunge era has already seen most of its base disipate. Maybe tomorrow emo and neo-wave will watch theirs fall as well.

What bands recording today will survive their own sub-cultres death?

I would say one band we don't talk about much on here that will is Incubus. I don't want to list all the bands i think, i just wanted to pose the question, and then threw out incubus because 1.) I wanted their influence to be discussed and 2.) didn't want to piss of Hatemonger by not answering my own post.

yea rhcp, was gonna say that.

Sneer 05-22-2005 06:16 AM

well, love them or hate them, oasis are still going despite britpop dying out in the 90s. the white stripes will carry on strong after the garage rock fad succumbs to a new trend in music- primarily because the band is actually bigger than the genre. new bands, its interesting your talking about the death of post grunge because i think the nine black alps are going to be the next big thing here in britian, and they are heavily influenced by the post grunge flag-bearers.

TheBig3 05-22-2005 11:59 AM

correct me if im wrong but every new band in brittian is going to be "huge"

Thats usually because they are ....for a couple of months

Tommyrocker 05-22-2005 01:05 PM

QOTSA are gunna do it i think if they keep the quality of previous releases.

I think also that S.O.A.D have pretty much done it... i mean they went quiet for a while and they come back with sum heavy metal **** for us. For which i am grateful/greatful/pleased.

Yeah SOAD is prospering in a genre that until recently had gone the way of the dinosaurs.

are Qotsa part of a particular genre? and yeah, SOAD have done well to stay relevant despite nu-metal going defunct.

i'd say just a plain old new wave of rock, solely due to the fact dave grohl is in them. I cant really assign them. They sound different - probably why they are enjoying success.

Sneer 05-22-2005 02:47 PM

yeah grohl was with them for one album. stoner-rock perhaps.

TheBig3 05-22-2005 04:51 PM

I thought he was on Rated R as well...

Starsha420 05-23-2005 02:58 AM

Well, at risk of being lynched, Blink-182 has done pretty well for themselves. And someone already said SOAD. I think Slipknot will be around for a while too. I was a little disappointed not to see Rush, because they still put out stuff to, and they have influenced alot of bands, including Metallica.

Sneer 05-23-2005 06:10 AM

no nick lucero was the drummer on rated R

SATCHMO 05-23-2005 07:09 PM

Mars Volta. I think they're going to revolutionize progressive rock as we know it. They've released 2 albums, both are great, but i get the feeling they're just beginning to come into their own.

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-24-2005 02:21 AM

Primal Scream

Because in 10 years time i`ll still be here saying how great they are until one of you bastards actually listens

Tommyrocker 05-24-2005 02:25 AM

Draven

*Waits for a Draven 'GnR' themed post.*

fair enough, screamadelica and xtrmntr are great albums. but i havent got any time for dirty hits, evil heat or give out but dont give up. vanishing points ok aswell i guess. i just obviously dont share the same enthusiasm for them.

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-24-2005 06:46 AM

Ah but their albums are notoriously patchy , I prefer to look at the bigger picture

Sneer 05-24-2005 06:48 AM

which is overall, i like 2 of their albums.

Static-Fear-Shot 05-24-2005 09:50 PM

I dont know what this has to do with the actual topic but l really really really loathe 'Napalm Death' ... thought l'd get that off my chest!

madeinNY 11-19-2005 08:49 AM

Well, Greenday's been around for a while. Why not another ten more?

Same here, and other bands like Sigur Ros have their own spin on ambient music, a very unique band.

UnEv3n 11-19-2005 07:58 PM

I'll have to say that only a few bands I lsiten to will live on.
Possibly SES..
TCP are being reformed by Flakus... They may continue what they started, which was what sounds like Slipknot 10 years before slipknot existed.
Perhaps The Dreaming, only because they're relatively new...
That's about it.

Kashmir86 11-19-2005 09:21 PM

the stones just came out with a new album a couple months ago. i think that's awesome that they still continue to write new material that's still really good, unlike robert plant who releases pretty much total crap, sorry if you liked his newest album

Scarlett O'Hara 11-20-2005 01:57 AM

I think that the Foo Fighters could live on possibly...I don't know to be honest, I'm not a fortune teller.
