Today Is the Day

I just found out about these guys, and have only listened to Temple of the Morning Star, but I already love them. They play grindcore and alternative, and they aren't afraid to play one over the other, and their songs don't all sound alike, which at this point is the most intelligent thing I can say about them, but they deserve a thread.

Edit: Had to add just one more. :band:

I've never quite been able to get into them (him, whatever). It's weird, I like all the pieces and they seem like something I'd dig, but somehow it just doesn't grab me. Maybe I've been listening to the wrong albums or something.

Ugh. This band seems to personify the "relapse records sound", :(

edit: also, no ****ing way are they grindcore.

What exactly is wrong with Relapse? Curious

I actually know what you mean. I tried listening to a couple of their other albums, and they didn't really do anything for me. Temple of the Morning Star seems to be an anomaly for me at this point. But it's such an amazing anomaly to me.

Of course they're not grindcore grindcore, but they certainly have a grindcore influence, along with noise rock and sludge. Which makes them better IMO, since, with a few notable exceptions, I've never really liked grindcore.

Novelty. They put out so ****ing many novelty records. Cephalic Carnage, Genghis Tron, The Dillinger Escape Plan, etc.

They have & will continue to put out good stuff, but it's the minority of their output, for sure.

I hear ya. I thought you were bashing it as a whole. I entirely agree about the novelty act sequence they go through at times. And it has become what it wasn;t supposed to be in a sense. Completely agree now that I see where you were coming from.

Bump time.

This is still one of my favorite albums:

Released on Amphetamine Reptile. More of a Noise Rock influence through out than on later releases. Essential album for me.

Willpower is a great album. They released several on Amphetamine Reptile, all of which I like more than the later stuff. But I like a lot of the Relapse stuff too, and don't consider them a novelty band at all. Steve Austin is seriously angry about something.

Willpower is an amazing album....and even more so Supernova

although i don't mind the later Relapse stuff....i feel it lacks the luster of their first three albums

either way i would never call Today Is The day "novelty" nor would i ever call them "grindcore"....but i would agree that 98% of the stuff Relapse puts out is annoying....but that they people who run it like to release gems from time to time
