This forum is a great way to do that! There's tons of recommendation threads all over for every genre, and you can make specific requests in each.

Last.FM works, Spotify works, and even youtube works. Just go to your favorite band's videos and along the side there will be some similar music that is bound to make you at least raise an eyebrow. Follow a trail and you'll get deeper and deeper into new music. O.o

I search for videos named "best rock bands", "best acoustic songs" etc on YouTube, this method always helps me come across a great band.

Spotify. I search for an artist I like, and then I check out the related artists. Nirvana led to Pearl Jam and R.E.M., Green Day led to Blink-182 and Sum 41. Musicbanter is a great way to find new bands too, why do you think I listen to emo? This forum introduced me to it. Without Musicbanter I would still believe that Fall Out Boy should be considered emo.

I usually check out record labels discography, if i like a particular band i find out what label they are on and check out the other bands, also lastfm, spotify and sites like sputnikmusic, stereogum, pitchfork, they all have a good new releases section with graded reviews so i check the band out on youtube or spotify afterwards.

http://rateyourmusic.com/

Look up a favourite band, click on one of their genres, and explore the list that comes up.

You guys, last.fm, lists of music (such as on rateyourmusic), and just band names that come up while reading about other bands and such. Just those few sources keep me incredibly busy.

in another thread you mention that you like grunge music.....i'll assume that you like that band called Nirvana right?

well in the liners notes of Incesticide they mention some band called Scratch Acid....matter of fact in Cobain's journals that were reprinted....the ****er could not stop talking about some band called Scratch Acid

seems this band Scratch Acid was a pretty big influence on Nirvana and possible many others in the grunge scene.....so...i dn't know maybe start with Scratch Acid and see what they are all about
