That's possibly the weakest of the 60's Troggs albums, but a purchase of the CD reissue from Repertoire will be your best best featuring then-non album singles sides like "66-5-4-3-2-1." From Nowhere wold be a better catch, the one with "Wild Thing" on it and some of the essential non-album singles sides as CD bonus tracks.
Cellophane and Hip Hip Hooray are good picks as CD reissues as well.
As there are a lot of essential Troggs songs that were served as singles sides, and for the price-conscience getting each of the CDs would be very costly if getting new. It's true that your best bet would be straight to the Compilations. I have The Vintage Years, a 1976 compilation on Sire that's a double album and with some detailed liner notes, but the best CD would be the 2-Disc Archaeology that includes the authentic "Troggs Tape". For a very good slimmed-down review, The Best of The Troggs from 1994 would be a great way to start, although there are a lot of hidden gems found on the 2-disc comps.
There was an album called The Troggs Tapes released in the Mid 70's, but don't be fooled if you're looking for "the tape". Still, the good news is that AMG has a good review of that album.
Collector's also have good words about the Fontana release of the Love Is All Around album (1968) featuring great singles sides chosen for the US release. |
