Do you mean who voted for him, or who is he? You can see who voted for who at the top.

Up there ^^

EDIT: Hmm, or can you? Usually can.

Anyway, i voted for Entwhistle.

here are some choice clips.

YouTube - Squarepusher - The Culture Show Bass Solo - live on 'the culture show', low visual quality but whatever.

YouTube - Squarepusher - My Sound - 'my sound' from the 'music is a rotted one note' album, fantastic track.

YouTube - Squarepusher - Delta-V live @ melkweg 28/11/2008 - again horrible visual quality but you get the gitst. track is called 'delta-v' from his last album 'just a souvenir'.

while he's not technically a 'rock' bassist, if you don't think that last clip rocks even just a little then you're either dead or far too narrow minded to bother ever conversing with again hahaha.

Video 1: a bunch of noise.

Video 2: some nice, relaxing, elevator music.

Video 3: very cool. Of course, it sounds very Les Claypool-ish.

to not like it is one thing, to call it noise has me writing you off as an idiot troll.

I'm an idiot troll because I called it noise?

mr dave 07-30-2009 11:52 PM

well... you make one liners throughout this thread, then call a clearly melodic piece 'noise'. what else am i supposed to think? gee, good thing i went out of my way to put together a half decent reply so it can be written off with more one liners?

anyway, getting back to the topic at hand, on a personal level it's all about flea in this competition, the chili peppers moved me far more than any other band i've ever heard. the who is just another really good classic rock act to my ears.

I listened to the videos you put together and gave you an honest opinion?

For the record, I did in fact say I enjoyed the third video. I wish said musician would stick to that style, but hey, different strokes.

I feel exactly the same way, obviously. Flea is one of my favorite musicians. I just like his style and the genre of music he has played in much more than Entwisle, who I have much respect for...

WeeLittleHobbit 07-31-2009 12:23 AM

Ha! Broke the tie! Entwistle takes it for me.

gunnels 07-31-2009 12:59 AM

Dude your pole was untied so I tied it for ya.

sorry i guess it's just misinterpretation. the use of the term 'noise' threw me off i guess. a melodic solo piece might be boring or cheesy or wank-tastic but so long as there's still some harmony and melody present i can't call it 'noise'. especially compared to some of the actual noise tracks out there.

on the plus side, it seems we can both definitely agree on flea (although i prefer freaky styley over the self titled :p: )

Oh I def do too, but I much prefer the album art from the first. Freaky Styley and Uplift Mofo are two of my all-time favorite albums. Although I prefer Les Claypool over "the squarepusher"... :p:

have to agree on that album cover as well hehe. with the exception of blood sugar sex magic their album cover art never did much for me.

as for claypool, as you said earlier different strokes heheh. it's not that i don't like him or admire his talents i just don't find his output to really stretch out that much. he plays rock songs with freak out bass and that's about it. he has tons of ability but i find him almost lacking in diversity. it's like he created his own style and now he's stuck playing it forever.

Have you heard his solo work? I think it's right up your ally then haha...

mr dave 07-31-2009 04:18 PM

i've heard some of claypool's more recent output (not sure if anything was totally 'solo') but unless he stops 'singing' and just focuses on playing cool instrumentals i'm pretty sure i'd just as soon go back to my old primus discs.

boo boo 08-01-2009 07:44 AM

I don't think he lacks diversity, guy has like a hundred different side projects and they all do something a little different.

Violent & Funky 08-01-2009 12:31 PM

mr. dave is right though, he just won't give up the mic (I like unique voices, even if they suck, cuz I don't give a **** about vocals). If I had to suggest something for him I guess it would be Oysterhead because Les doesn't handle all of their vocals or the Frog Brigade because they are way more jam oriented and thus less singing...

this is what i'm getting at though. take a handful of his tracks from various projects and play them for someone who never really paid attention to claypool or primus besides when 'wynonna's big brown beaver' was all over tv? ultimately how different are those groups to a casual listener? that's what i mean by diversity, not that he's not prolific, but that it's just more of his stuff, you need to be well versed in his material to be able to see the subtleties that divide the other groups.

if the side projects are just a little different than i don't think they really need new names. from what i heard of oysterhead and frog brigade it sounded like more primus with a slight twist, i suppose they needed to use new names due to legalities involved with prior groups but still.

boo boo 08-01-2009 04:25 PM

It would be stupid to call all of it Primus, they're all completely different bands with different lineups.

With Oysterhead for example, it dosen't sound to me like Anastasio is imitating Lerlonde, he's being himself, so it's not Primus.

Even if he always plays in that distinct slapping/muddy tone style, he implements it into a lot of different styles of music and that's not as easy as you're making it out to be.

mr dave 08-01-2009 06:09 PM

i'm not saying it's easy, i'm saying it's claypool straight across the board. regardless of who's drumming or noodling on a guitar, it's still a claypool outfit. it still ends up sounding like a claypool outfit. i call it similar to primus because that's the one i know best.

the biggest challenge in that situation is not applying the odd style to a slightly different way of playing a rock song but getting over the attitude that applying an odd style to a slightly different way of playing a rock song has to be complex or challenging. it's a common failing with so many amateur musicians, the physical ability is rarely the true limiting factor.

John Entwistle

I see what you are saying. Even with Oysterhead, while Anastacio is soloing Claypool is playing the same complex lines in the background--the mix is just toned down several notches. He has and always will play his same percussive style, and there is a lot to like and a little--for the harshest of critics :) --to dislike. But it's what Claypool fans want.

It's one thing that makes him very different from Flea. I personally feel Claypool has more ability to pack a punch in his lines. But what makes Flea a great musician is that he has adapted to so many different styles, not just with his different projects, but within RHCP itself.

I think Les is overdue for a reinvention anyways, especially with the dissapointment that was his latest disc...

cantstop 08-04-2009 03:45 AM

Flea

Paul Smeenus 09-29-2013 09:37 AM

This is like asking "German chocolate cake or Dutch apple pue?". They're both good but totally different.

Powerstars 09-29-2013 12:22 PM

Weird comparison, but totally Flea. No offense to Entwistle.

Neapolitan 09-29-2013 08:37 PM

Would personally say Flea. He's got that energy and groove. He's a great live player, very adventurous on the stage and will pop a little fill in every now and then that makes you go mmm.

He's not six feet under yet, so I guess he can still do all this.

Comparing to when Entwistle was alive.

Taxman 11-09-2013 07:02 AM

I would choose John. I'm not even big The Who fan, but Entwistle is in my top 3 when it comes to playing abilities.
Only Paul McCartney and Carol Kaye are better, in my opinion. Also Sting and Bill Wyman both are very close to be better than John, but I have never realized the reason why Flea is so overrated.
