Default Islander

I posted a thread about this new group on another forum that is not at all a music forum, so there has been pretty much no interest...

This band got my attention mainly because the band managed to draw a heavy influence from Deftones, and sort of meld it to a sound more their own in a sense, yet that influence from Deftones is proudly flaunted...make any sense?

First song I heard was New Colors. At first it wasn't too keen on it, simply because the initial sound I heard was more likened to that of the hardcore genre, which I have never been overly fond of to begin with. The song however did manage to redeem itself with that undertone influence I heard of the Deftones in portions of the song; chorus, some of the guitar hooks, lyrical theme. It wasn't until I heard Coconut Dracula that I found my interest really beginning to grow in Islander. That same Deftones influence takes center stage here with a sort of mildly atmospheric, heavy hook laden jam. That vocal delivery is right out of the Chino Moreno book of dreamy, sort of spacey vocal delivery. The song is catchy and stays strong from start to finish. I still think 'Coconut Dracula' is an odd lyric choice, but I've heard odder still from Chino Moreno.

My favorite track, which has not found its way to YouTube even though the bands album has been out for a short while, would be the bands song New Wave. It's one of those songs that you play during warm summer days, driving around in your car with windows down, just enjoying the nice weather. It's a chill song, but there's still those heavier moments.

Overall I think for those that really dig Deftones. Those same people will enjoy Islander as well. Certainly one of my favorite band discoveries of the year. You can find a few of their songs, videos on YouTube if you want to check them out.
