A small mixed bag when it comes to rock

Hey there! New here and as the thread title suggests I don't have a great deal of rock in my library. I have some stuff I really like but some of it is just this single song I own that's anything like it. Disparate...

I hope I'm posting this in the best place and I hope that there isn't a thread I should've just tagged this onto. But I'm looking for suggestions from fellow music lovers on some things I may enjoy. I'll give you a list and some details on some songs I like. Although it complicates things when some songs are of a style I'd normally be apathetic towards at best, but this particular song I love.

Nightcall (Kavinsky) this would be an example of what I just mentioned.

Mama (Genesis) I like some other stuff by Phil Collins. I'm looking for more of this style though. "In the air tonight" is another good example. I would appreciate some good like songs pointed out to me.

I have quite a few songs by Chicago. I like their livelier ones better.

Electric Light Orchestra. My favorite is "Turn to Stone."

I loved Billy Idol's "Dancing with Myself" the moment when I heard it when I watched "Flushed Away." (Given I'm only 20 that was an "early impression.") But I know I don't care for some of his other popular stuff.

I love "Footloose" and "I'm Free", but I didn't find anything else by Kenny Loggins I really just loved.

I like quite a few things by the Eagles. HOTEL CALIFORNIA!!!

Well if anyone can bring up some things I might like I'd appreciate it. Or if you find you have similar tastes in music to what I seem to have then suggest things you like. Oh and I listen largely to country. Love Josh Turner, Brad Paisley, Charlie Daniels Band, Alabama, Etc. Sooo... You may think your tastes are nothing like mine afterall.

You might want to check out Peter Gabriel and Boz Scaggs.

Most of the bands you've listed are pretty popular and you could easily search for best of lists and probably be just fine. If you like that particular Billy Idol song, i'd recommend checking out his first band Generation X. I always preferred them to solo Idol, but I gotta give Steve Stevens some credit hes a hell of a guitarist.

If you like Chicago, you might like Blood, Sweat & Tears. If you like The Eagles, you might also like Buffalo Springfield or The Byrds and maybe also Dickey Betts & Great Southern or The Allman Brothers Band or The Gregg Allman Band.

Just to name a few.

If you like Phil Collins then definitively Peter Gabriel.. but also some Robert Plant and David Gilmour.

Chicago fan then yeah, go with Blood Sweat & Tears but also Rare Earth and possibly Three Dog Night.

ELO.. Try Dire Straits, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Little River Band etc.. just lot's of good 70's and 80's artists in general

For Billy Idol, check out The Cars, The Knack, The Clash, Billy Squier, Aldo Nova, Robert Palmer, and the Police...While none of these are quite like his music ,they should be bands it'd seem to me, someone that like's Billy Idol might also like.

As for Kenny Loggins...I dunno..Bryan Adams maybe? Or Dave Mason, Bruce Springsteen may even be closer.

And The Eagles?..Defintively Poco..Also Pure Prairie League, Orleans, as well as Psy-Fi's suggestions.

Reminds me of post-punk.

If you want to give the genre a chance, check out Carpenter Brut.
I don't typically go for this style either, but EP II is pretty bangin'.

Hmm. There's a big difference between what Collins does solo and what he does on that album, the self-titled one. Compared to their other material, especially "Abacab", it's more what I think of as real progressive rock, and if that's what you're looking for (more than the likes of "Sussudio" or "Easy lover" or "You can't hurry love") then you might be better off checking the mid-seventies Genesis albums like "A trick of the tail", "Wind and wuthering" or even back to early 70s with "Trespass" and "Foxtrot". People here have recommended Gabriel if you like Collins; I would disagree. The solo material Gabriel put out, from the very start, was and is nothing like that of his ex-Genesis bandmate. It starts sort of proggy in a Peter Hammill way and later expands into a lot of "World Music" around the time of maybe "Us", where he brings in people like Yousso N'Dour (sp?) and the like, and influences from Africa into his music (though they were always really there, just not so much to the front).

Just because you like one solo artiste from Genesis does not necessarily mean you would like the work of others. I mean, I like Mike Rutherford but Mike and the Mechanics is mostly a world removed from Genesis, bar the first and some of the second albums. As far as ELO goes, I'm a big fan and assume you've heard all their albums? The last one was great, even if it was Lynne alone. Still very good. If you're into the more progressive side of Genesis I would suggest Marillion, perhaps Twelfth Night or Pendragon. And if you like the Eagles you should give Steve Earle a go for a more rockier country artist. I'm no big fan of Loggins but recently reviewed the soundtrack to "Top gun", which has two of his tracks on it, one of which is quite good.

Finally, let me leave you with Strawfoot...

^^^^^

What he said. Same goes for Chicago. What era of the band do you like? Their earlier stuff is very different than the Cetera dominated stuff from later in their careers.

The debut Chicago album is highly recommended by me.
