The Changing Face of Southern Rock

I just posted an interview with Lee Bains III of The Glory Fires where he talks a lot about the thinking behind the title of his latest album, Dereconstructed. He has a lot to say about people's perceptions of southern rock and his attempt to change those perceptions. In particular he talks about how people outside the south think all southerners are rural. But he and his band mates are southern, but all grew up in fair sized cities. I think it's a fair point. You can hear the interview and 3 tracks from Dereconstructed over at Americana Music Show, episode 202.

So they're southern city thugs?

Welcome to MB, Calvin!

I`d never heard of Lee Bains and the Glory Fires, so I thought I`d look at a couple of clips and let the music speak for itself:-

^ A very nice acoustic track imo, which surely doesn`t show any big change to the face of Southern Rock?

^ Despite the rural title, this song is certainly played with more aggression than I usually associate with Southern Rock - so of course I didn`t like it so much . But forty years down the line we shouldn`t expect every Southern Rock band to follow the laidback template of the Allmans, so I guess Lee Bains is right; the times they are a-changin`.

I've been listening to a lot of SR lately. Outlaws, 38 Special, Allman Bros, Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Rosington Collins, Marshall Tucker, etc., and what you've posted doesn't resemble anything like what was laid down by the forefathers of Southern Rock. Sure, it's good, but I wouldn't call it SR. They lack the raw edge that defines what SR is. They sound more like the Beatles with a Tele and banjo to me.

They are more Roots Rock than Southern Rock. Their sound is more akin to Justin Townes Earle.

Yep. Hogwash.

Also revealing evidence as to why I distrust nice people.
