Jesus, don't make me search for the thread where the conversation occurred.

Its all new news to me you think Pantera is such a well rounded band that should be one of the finalist.

I'm actually glad that you hold them that high in regard.

Well said Plankton.

You forgot to mention the Jackson 5, which were much better than the Partridge Family or the Osmonds were. :D

Elton John fits in there somewhere.

Thanks Necro. I did grow up with both of them as a teen, and having some in-depth knowledge from having learned quite a bit on guitar from each of their catalogs over the years does weigh heavily in my decision. Not that anyone gives a crap... but yeah.

I've also learned some Dimebag. He's good and all, but much of his technique is based around speed, where he falls short on elegance.

Btw, I was going for total opposite end of the spectrum with Osmonds and Partridges, and the J5 and Elton aren't as far as those two.

Maybe, mentioning the Bay City Rollers would have been a little more appropriate.

I should've gone a bit farther down the list.

Its funny how a lot of people (including myself) have to put Metallica in their list, but place it last so it doesn't get left out completely. I don't know why that's funny, but it is.

The Batlord 01-21-2015 04:49 PM

I don't listen to them as much as I did back in the day, but I bump Kill 'Em All too regularly to leave them out.

Norg 01-21-2015 06:10 PM

I've always, considered black sabbath a hard rock band and not metal,

And here I thought you were all Scorpions and Bon Jovi :)

I have to say I've never been able to get into Sepultura for the same reason I've never been a major Slayer fan, (I just don't care for the chromatics in the musical scales they use.)

Perhaps I should start a help William like Sepultura thread

I love the Scorpions as you know, but can't stand Bon Jovi.

If my journal is still going when Sepultura start releasing albums, then it will surely turn into the Sepultura show. Btw I'm a huge thrash and death metal fan so expect a lot of albums from those genres. My problem though is with black metal and hopefully when I listen to more it might change my mind a bit.

Well are you into early Bathory and Sarcofago? Considering how much metal is going to explode in the next few years there are going to be a million albums by groups deserving of inclusion who your AOR loving ass is going to be able to ignore for "lesser" groups. Don't go kicking off stuff that needs to be on there just cause of old man-itis.

I don't see how that's relevant. Both as a joke and seriously, I don't see what you're getting at. I know you've given off-list attention to albums that were important, but with how metal will be getting bigger in the coming years I can see you leaving off something like Bathory's debut if there's enough stuff more your speed in 1984, seeing as how you're not big on those kind of dirty, unpolished albums.

I mean, if there had been as many bands with classic albums in the year Venom released their debut as in later years of the eighties, can you say you wouldn't have dropped them? (I'm just talking about a theoretical higher number of albums, such as in 1986, not putting Venom up against later albums like Reign In Blood or Master of Puppets.)

You've put so much effort into this thing that telling you how to do your business is kind of presumptuous, but I still can't help but worry that you'll do things that are objectively wrong. ;)

Very actually.

Well Bathory much like Hellhammer have been dropped (even though Hellhammer is just demos and an EP) it's not that I can't see the relevance of those albums, the problem lies in that I just can't relate to them musically in any way, other than seeing them as the grassroots of the grassroots of various strands of extreme metal. For example if I include them in a top 20 I'd have to justify why I liked them, which is a bit hard when I don't. Now if I were writing a journal that was strictly based on the most relevant metal releases each year then the list would probably look very different and if I were a black metal fan then I'd probably be raving about them.

Probably not because I don't exactly get excited over early Venom, as you know I like my early extreme metal polished up at least a little bit like early Metallica and Slayer.

As said above more or less, my journal is not an objective view of metal but like most journals a subjective one. Of course to give it some greater validity I've listened to stuff that I don't always dig and included it because I kind of felt that it should be on there, but even when I do that I can normally find something that I like about the album.

Also based on your logic here, I should be covering every aspect of metal, now how many people do you know actually like nearly every kind of metal out there? Not many I'd say, for example how many people on this site go on about how great power metal is besides you and I and a few others?

The Batlord 01-22-2015 04:02 PM

Leaving out Bathory? That's a crime. That's like... one of the most important releases ever. You hate puppies and baby Jesus. Maybe you could include a section on early extreme metal at the end of your yearly lists that covers those important releases of the year that you're not into? Something that gives your thoughts but also recognizes their importance and influence. As great as your journal is I think it would be a serious flaw not to include something like that.

Ok because you're a nice guy and you asked nicely, and I think about you all the time, I'll include them at the end of the 1984 list somehow.

Btw I'm a fan of the later Viking metal albums of the band even though I haven't heard them in years, so I doubt that I'll need convincing to include them.

lol, its like were polar opposites when it comes to metal. I love hard rock AC/DC style, you like AOR. I prefer Metallica you prefer Slayer. You like death metal, I like black metal. (second wave) but at least we both don't like Bon Jovi....I do think his hit singles rock though
