How difficult is it to sing Death Metal

How difficult is it to really sing death metal, and are there other music genres that is more difficult?

DeadChannel 12-22-2014 06:36 PM

I can't speak to the difficulty, but I think there's a specific way to do it without risking damaging vocal cords.

Wpnfire 12-22-2014 09:55 PM

I'd say brutal death metal vocals à la Suffocation are the hardest of the extreme metal genres to sing, particularly live.

Zer0 12-23-2014 12:36 AM

I'd imagine it would be easier to growl death metal.

Frownland 12-23-2014 12:37 AM

About as easy as it is to rap. To bad it's knot music tho.

ladyislingering 12-23-2014 02:35 AM

Well, first you have to be dead.

Necromancer 12-23-2014 03:43 AM

A lot of vocal effects involved these days.

Bodhidharma 12-23-2014 05:45 AM

Oddly enough you still have to be able to carry pitch and project on key (even if you can't sing well). Growls, squeals, and screams that are off pitch/key sound unprofessional. You can work on that by growling with a piano. Other than that it just takes practice pushing air from the gut and not the throat. I know a lot of vocalists who lose their voice more on high screams than low growls.

ThePhronetic 12-30-2014 02:35 AM

welp, I imagine it hurts from time to time.

Must be easy because I can't sing worth **** but I can do a decent Death Metal imitation. Gives me a sore throat though!

I'm the opposite. I'm a pretty good clean singer but I couldn't do a harsh vocal if my life was on the line.

Music-Fanatic 02-12-2015 05:55 PM

I've tried to have a go but I ended up coughing and spluttering afterwards haha.

Don't know how they do it. Must be effects added on their voices nowadays.

Cradle Of Filth is about as far as I can go for listening to that kind of music. You don't know what they're screaming or growling about unless you look at the lyrics lol.

I suppose it takes some form of training yes, but not everyone has the ability to perform such tasks.

Dylstew 03-10-2015 02:03 PM

You need the proper technique to not **** up your voice (which is not easy but any singer must do this), and scream/growl on key.
If you wanna do punk screaming however, just yell and scream. You can't avoid damaging your voice, but the more ****ed up your voice the more punk you know.

Neff Anselmo 03-10-2015 02:10 PM

I wouldn't know. I'm not a vocalist.

HellCell 03-10-2015 03:49 PM

I've been afraid to try cause of the damage I heard it can cause. Though I would love to see how I end up sounding like if I do it professionally. I wonder what bands my growl would be comparable to.

Love John Tardy. One of the most amazing things about Obituary, besides everything else about them.

True that my friend, true that... John Tardy's vocals ARE amazing . If any Death Metal vocalist can truely be called a "singer" I think he has to be the one. Don't get me wrong I really like a lot of Death Metal vocalists but John is definitely my favorite. But even putting Tardy aside Obituary still has that Florida murder swamp stomp going for them. Great band.

Puffnstuff 03-19-2015 09:08 AM

From what I've heard I suppose that if you went out back and yelled at a tree stump for the better part of an hour or until your voice becomes horse then you should be all set to sing dm. :p:

BloodFoxTK 04-04-2015 08:46 AM

i would assume it's pretty difficult. though i've never tried.

i suppose it depends entirely on you and your voice.
