Is it better to give or receive?

In the spirit of Xmas let's give this a try.

Best band I've tried to turn MB members on to (Give):

Best band I've been turned onto from here (Receive):

Pet_Sounds 12-25-2014 08:44 PM

Nice idea.

Frownland and Drive hooked me on this Australian psychedelic band back in February.

My knowledge of non-psychedelic bands is trivial compared to most people here, so I haven't given many recs. But within the realm of psych, I did my damnedest to get Briks into these guys.

Frownland 12-25-2014 09:15 PM

Receive: Goofle got me into Boom Bip and Doseone and MRDOOD (mad respect, miss the guy) turned my on to Madvillainy and Aesop Rock. Those were the artists who discontinued my closemindedness about hip-hop (Bianche, do you read?). Other than that, I found out about Keiji Haino, one of my all time favourite artists, from Jack Pat, now known as (if he ever visited) Cenotaph.

Give: Well obviously Wolves In Sheepskin. I mean those sexy mother****ers are everyone's favourite band on here by now. It's the truth man, I'm just glad they almost like it as much as I do.

DeadChannel 12-26-2014 01:58 AM

I have to say, wolves in sheepskin was a huge turn on, in more ways than one...

Overcast 12-26-2014 02:24 AM

I was recommended by somebody on here to listen to Spiderland. Now it's one of my favorite albums, so thank you. I also decided to check out AJJ due to this site.

My eternal rec is The Microphones - The Glow Pt 2. I cannot understate my love for this album. Life before this album seems like some dull nightmare.

That was one of my favorite albums the year it came out. Great stuff!

James 12-26-2014 08:36 AM

Personal question. Probably should be in The Sexual Experience Thread or at least marked NSFW.

Mondo Bungle 12-26-2014 12:56 PM

Blarobbarg recommended me Igorrr, and now that's a favorite. Can't think of much else.

As for giving, well I only talk about the best bands, but no one really takes notice. Chokebore's the main one.

Mondo's only turned me on to Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound, Olivia Tremor Control, Love, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Hypocrite in a Hippy Crypt, and Ultimate Spinach.

Give:

King's X

Machine 12-26-2014 08:22 PM

Frownland have given me quite a few recs in my time here been loving White Suns, Fu****susha, John Cage, and Beefheart. Also I've been getting more and more into The Microphones and Mount Eerie thanks to Overcast.

Zhanteimi 12-26-2014 08:32 PM

I listened to Aesop Rock because of this forum. His albums failed to interest me beyond one listen.

Why? This thread seems to be strictly music related.

Just a dumb joke.

I have got into far too many bands off of recommendations from this site. Big ones are probably Sansa who recommended me an insane amount of the more obscure Classic Punk and Post-Punk bands. Mojo who I think was one of the first to break me into Metal through bands like Electric Wizard being mentioned in the shoutbox. More recently big ups to users like Ninetales and Anteater for regularly posting about interesting albums that are always worth checking out, even if they sometimes don't click.

Key 12-27-2014 02:07 PM

Give: I've been trying to get more people into pg.lost. Not sure how well that has gone or what people listen to them thanks to my fanboyism, but if you do like them, i'd love to hear your thoughts.

Receive: I saw a track of Igorrr from Janszoon and that it got me hooked right away. Anteater with his recent favorite albums thread has got me listening to Trioscapes. I'll post more if I can think of more.

Been meaning to check out this band for a very long time. What do you recommend?

I personally find Key to be their best release to date, but It's Not Me, It's You is a fantastic album to start with. Their discography is enjoyable no matter what way you go about it. If you want help getting some albums, I have all of them.

They're in my backlog so I'll post my thoughts on them in the near future.

Recieving is so much better.

Giving people a gift is actually a lot more satisfying.

For me it's usually not, because i'm greedy as **** with money.

Overcast 12-28-2014 03:25 PM

I feel bad when receiving gifts and content when giving. I just don't care about possessions (except for music) but I'm happy if it makes people feel better.

Frownland 12-28-2014 04:40 PM

I love giving recs and seeing people enjoy them. Quite a big fan of receiving them as well when they fit a certain request because it usually satisfies a mood for something that I've tapped out with music I know fits it.

Music suggestions are different though, I was just giving my opinion on the question in general.
I might be greedy, but when you give something and that person thinks it's amazing, that is pretty awesome.

Plankton 12-30-2014 08:17 AM

I could say this was a gift:

...and yes Chula, I did pick up on your gift from the OP. Received:

Much better strat tone IMO. And much better restraint.

So glad you are digging the Wreck. Such a killer band.

I thought the exact same thing. Nice tone, wish I could get that sound with my set up.

Shhh, don't let the SRV purists hear you, this place would burn.

$$$$$$$$ on equipment, not to mention the $$$$$$$$ on post production. I could be delusional though.

DwnWthVwls 12-30-2014 11:24 AM

Give: I try to give people a lot of indie rap artists but not many have ever responded to my suggestions. I was happy to hear back from the few who did. I think Last Emperor is probably one of the artists I've pushed most.

Receive: My grab list in plug is larger than any other list I have. I'm grateful for all the great bands I was introduced to from a variety of plug participants.
