I made specific reference to people like Hendrix et al, who had a huge influence on metal but explained why they would not fit the bill. When I do Classical Month I'll include Haydn. Yeah but I made this thread for that specific purpose. Of course anyone can discuss other influences; it's more Ki's comment that pissed me off if I'm honest. Like I say, some people don't bother to read the OP and then make smart comments. That annoys me.

If you're talking classical giants that had an influence on metal (oh crap! New idea alert!) then surely you gotta talk about this guy?

Nah, Haydn's structural and melodic approaches are very close to what you hear in traditional metal. I'm getting the impression that you still have not listened to any Haydn because I find the similarities almost glaringly obvious.

I have. In fact he wrote the German National Anthem, which was for some odd reason my school song, just with different lyrics.

But you're clearly seeking attention by bringing up such an outlandishly unintuitive claim. Mission accomplished I guess.

So is anyone going to take this seriously, or will I just go and make my own choice, leading to a chorus of derisory "Why did you choose him?" next year?

@Bart Calling it outlandish doesn't make it so. I'm still not convinced that you've ever listened to Haydn. If you transcribe a Haydn song for guitar drums and bass, used distortion she appropriate and played faster, depending on the piece, it would sound closer to Metallica or something along those lines. Think outside of the context of orchestral music and maybe you'll see it too.
