If that’s the case, it appears Rush is no more. In a new interview with Drumhead Magazine (via Jambase), Peart spoke frankly about his coming to terms with retirement. “… Lately Olivia has been introducing me to new friends at school as ‘My dad– He’s a retired drummer.’ True to say–funny to hear. And it does not pain me to realize that, like all athletes, there comes a time to… take yourself out of the game. I would rather set it aside then face the predicament described in our song ‘Losing It’ (‘Sadder still to watch it die, than never to have known it’).”

Aside from aforementioned health issues, Peart previously mentioned his desire to spend more time with family. Following the tragic deaths of his daughter and first wife in the late ’90s, Peart remarried in 2000. He and his wife had a daughter, Olivia, in 2009.

Nice to see him retiring after all these years, he had a good run. Though I will say I'm definitely not a fan, very overrated of a drummer in my eyes.

How exactly is he overrated? Where is this overrating coming from? It's not (for instance) from the the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. It took Rush 30 years to get into the RnR HoF. Is it the fans? I think he worth every bit of respect given to him by his fans.

I'm not saying he's a bad drummer by any means, or worthy of the respect, but I get really tired of people claiming him to be the best drummer of all time and things like that, when clearly that's just a lack of knowledge of better drummers.

He's still a great drummer, just not the best.

Peart is easily in the top 5 most influencial rock drummers of the 70s.

I mean, he's pretty much universally regarded as the best in rock circles. I don't think that he's overrated given his genre because his audience isn't likely to know about jazz drummers that I might think are way better than Peart. Rush is also more in the public eye than any jazz drummer apart from Buddy Rich, which makes him more likely to dominate discussion about best drummers. So I see where Tristan Geoff is coming from.

Sad to see the news, but I'm glad that he didn't play to the point of embarrassing himself (cough, cough, Chuck Berry, cough). I'm glad that I got to see him live before he called it quits.

Chuck Berry damn near invented the whole genre of "rock" music. If he hasn't earned the right to play until he drops dead on stage then I don't know who has.
