Default "I Like the Music, But Do They Have to Scream?"

A lot of people seem to have trouble getting into one of the staples of metal: screaming/growling/shrieking and it's cutting them off from a lot of great music. I used to have this opinion when I was growing up with metal but something just happened along the way and I was cool with it.

I was wondering if you guys had any entry level screaming tracks or any methods to get used to the style. I was also interested if anyone is able to share their personal experience of how they stopped worrying and learned to love the growl.

I liked thrash. I like progressive metal. I liked Deftones.

My buddy liked Meshuggah but I just couldn't quite get around the heavier vocals on songs like Bleed, but then he showed me New Millenium Cyanide Christ and I loved it, since the vocals were quite close to thrash and it was a little easier to digest. From there I just got more and more tolerant to it. I only really enjoy it with a couple groups though, and only tolerate some of it cause it is kinda annoying at times, but never really grating or too much to handle like it used to be.

I'll check that dictionary, but in the meantime I'm impressed - as is everyone else in the world - by your eloquence, obvious accomplishments and success, and the evidence of your blazingly high intelligence.

when i was in my early teens i thought my chemical romance were metal... i was NOT used to hearing screaming/shrieking in music i guess just cause i was never exposed to it. it made absolutely no sense to me why anybody would enjoy listening to the screaming but yeah... after getting more and more into metal it started to sound okay to me but honestly, some of it still sounds annoying.

Before about 2005, I did not prefer the growls, groaning, and screams (outside the few delivered by Phil in Pantera). However, I remember the first time I pondered the crossroads of interest. I was listening to "Full Moon Madness" by Moonspell off of "Irreligious" and thoroughly enjoying the music until near the end the harshness began. Having to face, I could finally branch out and get the "Intelligent man's 'Death Metal' of Opeth, I threw in the towel rejecting it. It led to me getting into Graveworm, Estatic Fear, and countless others in the Gothic Metal genre. I realized at some point that the characterization of the growls, screams, groans, has a narrative reason as to why they are there in some songs, and not others.

I actually thought , once like when i was way younger,16-17? that metal was the only entity that would save the entire humanity and the world, I remember even swearing it to my friends to mark my words lol ...now I really wish that was true..i still do hope even now actually at 27. ppl jst dont want to find out what it is all about ..they'd rather with only the nicest things and let others deal wit the dirty jobs.. i find that very selfish and irresponsible..I know ,I mean it may sound annoying and loud and distracting and what not but come on if look deeper or care enough to look into what's behind the so called growling, squealling one may find priceless treasures...simple, read the damn lyrics.these guys have a lot to say that makes a hell lot of sense, they are serious people with good intend, truth is ugly you know and obviously anger come with it (I.e if you really have a heart and care for something).you can't help but SCREAM being angry ...look at the way the system is, the values we embrace ah!.....you know better.., youd b actually surprise to find dudes with long hair, tattoos , spikes n piercing are the nicest ppl on the planet..to
cut it short for me metal music opened my eyes and I'd remain thankful cos now I know what I believe is the truth and it set me free, I denounced everything then.. I only believe in trying to be good and help myself without letting other pay for my needs, greed, or whatever!...I treasure bands like FEARFACTORY, Faith no more,TOOL and zillion screaming n not screaming others as well, most that belong in the 80sto early 20th...and now I hate to see it becoming more like a trend rather than a revolution, Bt there is always hope I suppose.........
