The first of a ponderous series of works exploring the nature of existence and man's purpose, France's Monolithe have written a truly magnificent concept record that feels oppressive, hopeful, soothing, and haunting all at once. Different from most Funeral Doom in the lack of focus on death, decay, etc., Monolithe I tells an abstract tale of creation and accretion of matter to form that most fragile of elements, life. II, III, and IV are all top-tier Funeral Doom as well, but Monolithe I is where it all begins. A must listen for fans of the genre:

What's wrong with regular Doom music?

Full of droning psychedelic dirges that you'd swear have somehow slipped you LSD, England's Esoteric are recognized masters of the disaffected, the damaged, and the dead. Epistemological Despondency is a study in madness, capturing the mind as it spirals into depression tinged with schizophrenia. Most of Esoteric's albums have a different feel. I'm most familiar with The Maniacal Veil (after Epistemological Despondency) and keys feature more prominently, capturing a baroque quality to the ever present, and ever fragile, sanity of the proceedings.

Excellent music for writing, driving in bad weather, playing outside your house on Halloween.

Pure drone/funeral doom - stone-cold classic

A bit closer to death/doom (at least this track) - shows a bit of their variation.
