Rolling Stones 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time

The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time | Rolling Stone

Man this list has it all, it's at times cringe inducing, obvious, surprising, and perplexing. Every time I see an oddball choice I have to wonder if the author(s) just popped over to RYM's Top 100 albums under the metal tag when they thought the list was just a little too obvious, and then had to overcompensate for that by throwing in another album to negate the obvious choice.

No real point to this thread, I've just noticed a lot of hostility lately and figured we could have a big ol' laugh taking the piss out of a publication that was never really relevant to the metal scene to begin with.

How many people these days honestly think Blizzard of Oz is an all-time metal classic? It might have had it's place in 1980, but it's truly far from an essential album, even if "Suicide Solution" is a ****ing banger. It just seems like list makers don't want to rock the boat too much and so they just throw it in in their top 10 cause it's easy.

LoathsomePete 06-22-2017 12:39 PM

I think its status as a metal classic has more to do with it being his debut solo album. I dunno, I think it's a bit cheeky to put that in the top 10 alongside two Black Sabbath albums.

EDIT: So I was just curious and was looking at the Top 100 Metal Albums according to RYM and it's uncanny how similar the lists are. I mean #1, #2, and #6 are the same

It's not so much cheeky as it's just expected. You gotta have an Ozzy album in the top 10, or at the very least in the top 20, and it's gotta be Blizzard of Oz.

Pantera do not belong anywhere near a top ten list of anything.

The Batlord 06-22-2017 01:04 PM

Top 10? No. Top 20? No. Top 30? No. But they have a place somewhere in there, even if Vulgar Display of Power is hella overrated. I'd be satisfied if the only Pantera album on the list was Far Beyond Driven and it was somewhere on the backend of the list. I guess I wouldn't be offended by Vulgar either.

I'm surprised it's Vulgar honestly. I always thought Cowboys From Hell was the most celebrated album by mainstream media.

CFH has more radio singles but I always see Vulgar being touted as their best. Should've been Far Beyond Driven, I agree with Bat on that one.

British Steel is overrated. Saxon's Wheels of Steel and Strong Arm of the Law are far better albums.

I've always thought Strong Arm of the Law was kind of overrated. It's got a lot of truly solid songs, has more balls than Denim and Leather, and is more consistent than Wheels of Steel. It's good, but never connected with me as much as I'd like. There are just no truly 10/10 songs to blow me away like even some of there ****tier albums have (alright, maybe "Heavy Metal Thunder" and kind of "Dallas 1PM"). I'd definitely take British Steel over it, but Wheels of Steel is a top 10 metal album for me.
