Modern metal

I don't know if there's an equivalent thread already, but I couldn't find one. Ok, full disclosure: I didn't even try.

Anyway, I thought that it would be nice to have a thread dedicated exclusively to metal that's both modern in style and in terms of when it was released. If it's been published somewhere between 1999 and now and isn't mainly basing itself on 80's metal genre's like heavy metal, old school progressive metal, power metal, thrash metal, death metal, black metal and other old, established genres like that, it's allowed in this thread.
Basically, I want to know what metal you people are listening to that is looking forward rather than backwards. It seems to me that 90% of all metal discussion on this forum is about some pretty traditional sounding stuff, so I want to try and further discussion about metal that is way more modern in sound.

I can't possibly be the only one who isn't all about old-school sounds?

Leprous - Illuminate

I'm trying to get into this band. Their most recent material is very much modern metal in a compositional sense, but the guitar tones on their most recent album push things into a sort of weird territory where it arguably isn't even quite metal anymore(?)

90% of the metal that I listen to is modern. I only like a very small fraction of traditional heavy metal and an even smaller fraction of thrash (too repetitive).

Portal is like a shape-shifting beast that's been dismembered and reassembled and it's also infected with eels.

While old school black metal has grown into a cliche at this point, it's still being pushed forward in new ways.

Modern death metal and old school death metal are as different as two very different things

^I'm listening to this at blistering volume right now. It remains to be seen how interesting it is at album lenght, but during these first few minutes, I'm totally on board.

Right now, my first impression is: The newest Iwrestledabearonce album + more raw, black metal-ish production and guitar tone + a hint of post black and black in the compositions.

Didn't realize you edited your post, so I chose to check out that second band. This Coma Cluster album reminds me heavily of the Dir En Grey album Dum Spiro Spero right away. Not sure if this comparison will stick as I get further into it, but at first, it's a striking similarity.

EDIT: Ok, so it changes into something more techy and "brutal" along the way, but I dig it. The sound of this album is right up my alley. It's more a question of whether the individual tracks will hold my attention long term. But I'm happily listenning to it right now. Good stuff.

Not a big Gojira fan (yet) but this song is amazing:
