Weirdest Rock Album of the 60s

The 70s obviously had an explosion of art rock, but the 60s was an infant stage of art rock and so the truly weird albums are kind of few and far between. So what's the weirdest?

If Beefheart counts then I assume Trout Mask Replica would win, but I honestly don't know if it's a rock album or just a rock-influenced album. If it is then please give me your second choice. I'd have to go with Black Monk Time.

I'm sure there are more and weirder ones but this is a good contender.

I'm sure people will disagree, but Fifty Foot House is still pretty weird by today's standards.

Here's a two-fer...

The Godz - Contact High with the Godz (1966)

The Godz - Godz 2 (1967)

TMR is #2 on the weird grade. Oh and TMR totally counts. This album isn't fully rock though.

Philosophy of the World was released in 69.

Napoleon XIV

Jerry Samuels talks about making the album:

Kinda hard to top Orgasm. Extreme metal's roots all go back to this one song.

Frownland 06-25-2018 01:41 PM

That was my choice as well but someone pulled the full album video off of Youtube.

Exo 06-25-2018 02:09 PM

The United States of America's self-titled album sounds so much better than the individual parts that went into its creation.

A formally trained, avant-garde classical composer with an obsession with turn-of-the-century jazz and the Great American Songbook wants to make an ultra political, psychedelic rock album with electric sounds made by homemade instruments and no guitars.

What should have been an unintelligible mess ended up as one of the best psychedelic and experimental albums of the 60's.

It's phenomenal, but is it really that weird?

Same goes for Silver Apples, Exo.

To be fair, your opinion on what is weird or not is incredibly different from like 90% of everybody else on this planet.

That's not fair either since 99% of everybody else on the planet is dumb as ****.

Kinda what I was getting at earlier, but I think the perceived weirdness gets undercut because USA sounds as good as it does. It's an experimental album and a relatively accessible album, and neither of those facts disqualify the other.

How about the Fugs' first album?

Anteater 06-26-2018 09:49 AM

In retrospect, In The Court Of The Crimson King was a pretty strange album. Apparantly the first time Fripp and co. played 21st Century Schizoid Man live it caused a massive stir.

Cool. Almost everything in music nowdays goes back to the late 60s

TechnicLePanther 06-27-2018 08:57 PM

If you count it as rock, then I would propose An Electric Storm by White Noise.

The last track especially is one of the creepiest things I've ever heard in my life.

Lisnaholic 06-28-2018 06:36 AM

Famous (in Brazil at least), Oz Mutantes' self-titled 1968 album was pretty experimental in a sixties pop/rock kind of way. Here's the first track and the rockier second track:
