Default Helstar

Alright, time to unleash my inner fanboy and dedicate a thread to the greatest band of all time, Helstar. From heavy metal, thrash, and power, these guys have done it all perfectly.

If forced to choose, their debut Burning Star is my all time favorite album, and has one of the most badass album covers:

and they're still going strong today:

Anyone else want to discuss these metal gods?

One of those bands that kick all amounts of ass I've never given the correct amount of time to.

Now's the time to listen to all of Burning Star then isn't it?

Plus frontman James Rivera did some awesome stuff outside of Helstar too, the album he did with Vicious Rumors is great:

This is one of the greatest songs ever made. I've always loved this song and some of the others, but I can't believe it has taken me this long to completely fall in love with Remnants of War. Might honestly be my third favorite Helstar album after Burning Star and Multiples of Black

I don't get the lukewarm reception of this album, even among other Helstar fans. The hooks and grooves on it are infectious. After Burning Star, this is probably my most listened to album from them. I'm not sure if this is my favorite on the album, as it could be many, but it's definitely the one that I've been listening to most lately.

I don't think I get the appeal of this band, especially not if we're talking all time greatest across all genres of music. I don't really see any above average musicianship and I don't think the songwriting is that convincing.

But I do know how sometimes there just a special "something" about a band that one latches on to. It's like how probably very few people get why I think Crystal Viper are so good, because it's hard to point to any specific stand-out trait of that band.

Basically. They're just a really good form of a certain kind of 80s metal that's rare to find, or at least rare to be that good since most bands of talent past a certain year weren't playing metal that traditionally while still melding it with then-current influences.

That's the easiest way to explain it really. I would say their songwriting and riffs are through the roof, but that may be the fanboy talking.

On the subject of songwriting though, I've always been blown away by how many quick riff and tempo changes are in this short song, but they'e done in such a way that it all feels like a natural flow. Especially those jagged thrash riffs that go straight into a neo-classical metal guitar melody.
