Sunn 0))) vs. Boris

That Texas guy's vs. threads can be arbitrary but they're fun and get people talking so here's the two top drone dogs. And no they don't have to be compared simply on the basis of their drone albums but you can if you want. If you want to declare Boris superior for releasing a pop album then be my guest.

OccultHawk 04-07-2019 11:42 AM

Both great and very close but Boris

Boris has a little more mystique

and Amplifier Worship and Pink have made it deeper into my heavy rotation listening than any Sunn0))) records (and who knows why)

The Batlord 04-07-2019 11:43 AM

I mean drone metal is neat and I guess Sunn 0))) has explored that sound more and in greater depth than Boris but I don't actually need an entire discography of drone metal so Boris' mastery of way more than drone gives them an easy win.

Frownland 04-07-2019 11:47 AM

*O)))

I prefer their darker approach.

Throw me some recs so that I may judge fairly.

First album to get into since it's easier on the ears and diverse so you still get a feel for their sound and difficulty to pigeonhole.

As far as Boris here's one of the definitive drone metal texts.

Here's post-rock that doesn't bore me.

Here's that time they made a J-rock album.

Listen to as much of those as you want cause I can't be bothered to give recs by song given how off the wall Boris is. They don't even have a definitive sound.

OccultHawk 04-07-2019 12:49 PM

You know bat

ligeti did the stoner drone thing with a symphony orchestra a solid 40 years before these guys did it with guitars

You mean your last post in the Listening thread? Or was that just the artist and not the release?

Yeah

It’s very similar ultimately

I guess at times and I can hear a similarity with Flood more so than anything more metal that Boris did but mostly I thought I was listening to a horror movie soundtrack and then I Googled the guy and saw that he made a bunch of film soundtracks so that's pretty interesting. Honestly I don't want to sound like a pretentious dip**** who's trying to sound like he's too good for Mozart and Beethoven but modern classical is by far more interesting than older stuff to the point that I think in 20 years it'll have become my obsession. Probably not before 20 years though.

OccultHawk 04-07-2019 01:31 PM

Lots of those modern guys made the freak fighter top forty but Beethoven was the only “older stuff” dude

Frown correctly gave me **** for leaving off Bach, however

Mondo Bungle 04-07-2019 01:42 PM

Janáček is where the fire is

Bach's like the dividing point between old and new isn't he? I'm pretty ignorant but as far as I know that's around where flowery fades into pure sound experimentation right?

No. He’s way earlier but you knew that I think. Plus, why are we pretending you can’t job bring up the dates?

Do you draw a connection between his music and Viking metal?

Job bring up the dates? Whatever you're implying I'm totes ignorant of classical in general.

No but I thought you might

I get it’s a stretch but I was think folkish theme in a more complicated context

Did you read the Haruki Murakami book where the character was obsessed with Janáček? I think it was 19?4

Mondo Bungle 04-07-2019 02:00 PM

yeah I've read all his books

Most of my knowledge of classical is pick-and-choose vids from MB. This isn't my wheelhouse.

I was really into it in high school

Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage and After Dark are mad weak and pointless though

Yeah

A person feels in some way disconnected with reality

Strange unexplainable things start happening

A past trauma is revealed

an alternate reality is discovered

characters reflect on the absurdity of it all

I love it though

He creates a vibe that’s totally groovy and unique
