Krautrock... and beyond

Krautrock = "Kosmische musik" in German !:)
What started out as a derogatory term coined by the British press in the early 70’s, soon became a prestigious lexicon in the collective circle of musicians who would soon find inspiration and influence with this German-based sound..

Prominent groups associated with krautrock music included Neu!, Can, Faust, Kraftwerk, Cluster, Ash Ra Tempel, Popol Vuh, Amon Düül II, Tangerine Dream, and Harmonia

Ambient/Art Rock legend Brian Eno was quoted as saying that Harmonia was “the world’s most important rock band” after the release of their classic 1974 debut Musik von Harmonia.

Neu! ’75, which has influenced everybody from David Bowie (His 1977 opus”Heroes” was directly inspired by the krautrock of Neu!, Cluster, Kraftwerk, and Harmonia.

We have a thread called 'Kosmische Musik/Krautrock' already, do you intend this thread to have a different purpose? Nice initiative though, I know shamefully little about Krautrock but Can and Faust are some of my most recent musical obsessions so I'd love to learn more

I'm German and I know even less about Krautrock than you. :)

I heard most of the names but I know just a few songs consciously. I didn't know the term "Kosmische Musik" before.

I'll have you know I'm 1/8 German actually!

Krautrock is a huge and popular genre, and I once explored its presence on MB, putting together the list of threads below:-

Two attitudes seem to recur when people mention Krautrock on MB:-
(i) old-timers who`ve seen it all five years ago groan at the prospect of yet another Krautrock thread
(ii) newcomers can`t find threads about Can or other Krautrock bands and they restart old discussions all over again.

Krautrock is also a genre that people can`t quite decide on, and threads turn up in the avant-garde / metal and prog sections of MB, though the majority of thread starters have chosen this Prog Rock sub-forum for their threads. Anyway, I thought an index might clarify things for Krautrock fans - all they have to do now is find this post, haha.

Krautrock threads:-
http://www.musicbanter.com/avant-gar...utrock-11.html - extensive thread started in 2008
http://www.musicbanter.com/rock-meta...rock-week.html -this worthy thread very quickly became Krautrock For Advanced Students and focuses on the obscure fringes of Krautrock.
http://www.musicbanter.com/avant-gar...-top-10-a.html - good if you want lists of bands; short on analysis
http://www.musicbanter.com/prog-psyc...krautrock.html - a short thread exploring modern bands that aren`t German. Is that still Krautrock?
https://www.musicbanter.com/avant-ga...utrock-me.html - chatty and instructive, an indication of MB as it used to be more than a true guide to Krautrock

Krautrock Bands:-
http://www.musicbanter.com/avant-gar...n-duul-ii.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/avant-gar...12316-can.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/prog-psyc...201-faust.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/prog-psyc...15942-neu.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/rock-meta...rammstein.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/electroni...ine-dream.html

Krautrock Albums:-

http://www.musicbanter.com/album-rev...er-2004-a.html

I don't understand the full implications of these things, but I wonder if a mod would consider making a "sticky" Krautrock thread in the Prog Music section. One candidate for that honour might be this existing thread:
https://www.musicbanter.com/prog-psy...ck-thread.html
If I were a mod, I'd take the "?" off its title, delete a duplicated post and leave it as MB's Masterthread for all Krautrock fans.

I'm on it if I can muster the courage

Well that's a really nice gesture, Marie - to satisfy my sense of orderliness.

I don't know if it's easy -or necessary- for you to check in with another mod. ( The last time* I suggested merging a couple of World Music threads, grindy vetoed the idea and I know for a fact that many people aren't interested in turning MB into an encyclopedia. They see it more as like twitter or WhatsApp; only today's post is of interest.)

*edit: the last two times, actually, because I also suggested merging a couple of Jazz threads recently, which was condemned by OH and grindy, I think :( Anyone else seeing a pattern here?

Yeah sure, I'll wait to see what the other people think

I for one would love MB to be easier to traverse
