Greta Van Fleet

Ok so these guys are obviously controversial but why not have a thread about them anyway. Everything I've heard up until now has sounded like a Led Zep tribute band, but this new song sounds like they're aping someone else:

Some people say Rush? But I'm not familiar with them. Also, his vocals seem less like Robert Plant (and are quite impressive technically).

Anyway, it feels like a move in a better, slightly more interesting direction (or at least one I'm not very familiar with  )?

Hmm?

TheBig3 04-12-2021 09:50 PM

His vocals are a lot closer to Geddy Lee here, but the music isn't. I'd go with something closer to big 70's rock like Boston. It's not a direct lift, that organ has a Yes/ELO vibe to it. The vocals I think is supposed to be Geddy Lee but he kinda goes off the rails and has a little bit of Willie Watson (as you might hear in Midnight Special for example).

Lifting from other bands isn't the sin others make it out to be. But you need to inject your own ideas into it, or at least merge two styles together until you create your own sound. GVF isn't there yet, imo, but at least they now sound like they're getting there.

That last album was disgusting. It was like children trying to impress their dirtbag uncle who still drove a Camaro and was trying to hold onto his youth.

edit: there was a weird synth revival in the indie rock scene about ten years ago that I can hear on this as well. Like Foxy Shazam's "Oh lord" or Butch Walker's "Synthesizers."

Agreed. To be fair to them, Airbourne sound identical to AC/DC. It's just that GVF are more mainstream so they get flak for it probably.

I love what she’s done for the environment

Airbourne sound like ACDC but they're a legit impersonation of ACDC who deserve to be left to their impersonation cause they rule.

The Batlord 04-15-2021 07:08 PM

God damn I'm listening to Airbourne's debut for the first time in years and there's literally no reason why it wouldn't have dominated butt rock radio and gone platinum except that they just didn't have the label backing. Rednecks woyld have obessed over this album and I would have bumped fists with them over it

That's pretty fun. And for some reason less bothersome than GVF's impersonation of Led Zep. Maybe because it's more fun?

Why not have two threads about them anyways? I made one about them roughly two and half years ago.

I mean Airbourne aren't studied about anything. They're not trying to be anything. They just wanna get drunk and ****ed up and rock out and sound like their favorite band.

Yeah I saw that but it's some kind of a comparison battle thread. So...:/

I had originally ignored that comment because I thought you meant Airborne Toxic Event. Appreciate the clarficiation.

Greta Van Fleet compared to Led Zeppelin, Yes, ELO, Rush, Airbourne versus Greta Van Fleet compared to Church of the Cosmic Skull ... wow what a big thematic difference between the two threads! i e multi-comparisons versus a "comparison battle." tbh I don't think you can mention GVF without someone making a comparison of them to some other band. :/

Actually the title of your thread is the following: Final Showdown: Greta Van Fleet versus Church of the Cosmic Skull implying a specific comparison between two bands.

Inside the thread itself, people are commenting if they prefer one or the other and mostly posting about the latter.

Two different things.

Now stop being a dick about it.

What I read in this seems more like a comparisons of GVF to older bands. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong. My thread was also about preferences cause it had a poll. The poll implied the "preference" of the voter.

I guess that's why Steel Panther and Foxy Shazam work too. But the former is more of a satirical thing.

The Batlord 04-17-2021 09:54 AM

Yeah Airbourne are just naturally meatheads born in the wrong time.

Raime 04-21-2021 12:43 AM

Greta Van Fleet is the kind of band your old Uncle would not listen to, but say "It's nice to see some young people playing REAL instruments again."

They ooze "Music was better back in the day" kind of vibes, and nothing pisses me off more than that.

adidasss 04-21-2021 02:00 AM

Yeah if you go to the comments section of any of their videos, you would see a lot of those comments, almost verbatim.

TheBig3 04-21-2021 10:48 AM

Reminds me of a review I was reading of Jane's Addiction that claimed they (Jane's) was the real heir apparent to Led Zeppelin, despite legions of British Banana-curl-fronted rock acts that came out between Zep and Janes.

I always use that as my Northstar. Looking and sounding like the band is easy. Capturing the ethos and the spirit is both harder, and the real legacy.

the first thing i thought of when watching that music video was that the guitarist looks very similar to the dude from skins who's only initial personality trait was that music other than metal was shit

They are, but Justin Broadrick is cooler.

those seasons get a lot of flak, but that scene where rich finds out about grace has stuck with me more than any other.

tbh I thought the writing and tie up for that 'generation' was better than the previous two

It really depends what I want to listen to at the moment, but Godflesh and JK Flesh are top tier. Imagine starting out in a band that defined Grindcore, getting bored and starting another band that helped define Industrial Metal. Even after all that he decided to make legit Techno music and stay relevant almost his entire career.

I'mma move this over to the Godflesh thread and stop derailing this one.
