This will cause a massive shitstorm somewhere along the lines

I will go for Neil Peart, simply because I hold his rhythm in better taste. But both are golden drummers everyone should learn something from.

If we are talking about pure technical skill, then it would be Peart by a longshot, its not even close, Peart is a very clean and precise drummer, Moon as exciting as he is on drums was very sloppy and occasionaly missed beats because of it...In terms of greatness though, Moon is way up there, top 5 for me, he was very innovative for his early use of double bass drums.

boo boo's got it.

There really can't be a conclusive "who's better" (no pun intended), because they ae two completely different drummers.

Peart is a master of the clinical, concise, very regimented approach, while Moon was a true free spirit.

This is strictly my opinion, but I feel Peart's style, while very, very impressive, is a detached sort of by-the-numbers approach. Everything he does fits exactly in the spot where it belongs. There's no emotion involved. It's as if he's building a car, with every nut and bolt torqued to exactly the correct psi.

Moon, on the other hand, at times, seemed to just channel the music through himself, out to his kit. There was no true rhyme or reason, just a free flowing cacophony, bursting at the seams, that just seemed to make sense.

I suppose a good simile would be; while both drummers used all the crayons in the box, Peart always colored within the lines, and Moon didn't.

Keith Moon is my all-time favorite - rent or buy the DVD "The Who - Live at the Isle of Wight" - he's such a great entertainer - if they had the camera only on him for 2 hours - it still would hold my attention.
Neil Peart is great as well - I have him on my Metal Supergroup at supergroup.netfirms.com/index4.html
