You're right there. I think what made them unique was their ability to be musically competant but at the same time very laid back.

Who's the better musician, John Paul Jones or Brian Jones? I kind of like the comparison. Both names end in Jones, haha. Both were probably the most overall talented members of their bands (Zeppelin and The Stones), but they both got overshadowed a little by the other members. Both could play many of the same instruments such as keyboards, organ, mellotron, sitar, banjo, and cello. Both could play many more instruments as well.

So, who do y'all think is better?

I like the sound of this. It's an interesting comparison. To be honest, anyone in a band with Jimmy Page will be overshadowed to some extent, and anyone in a band with Jagger and Keith Richards will also be overshadowed. I'm going to have to look a bit more into this.

It's pretty tough. I kind of want to say that Brian Jones was better.

Alright. I've been gathering some Stones albums in the past couple weeks and the more I listen to the more awesome I think they are. I tried listening to them a while back and they did basically nothing for me (I was turned off by what I perceived as a lack of consistency on the albums I had heard) but after a few listens they are growing on me a ton. Im beginning to understand why they are held in such high regard!

So far I've got Big Hits (High Tides and Green Grass), Aftermath, Between the Buttons, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed and Exile on Main St. I plan on picking up Sticky Fingers and Some Girls once they pop up at the record store. Maybe Their Satanic Majesies Request...

Brian Jones got overshadowed because he was a prick and he couldn't write songs.

You don't need to say things like that. If he was a prick, why did they keep him in the band for so long? Anyway, the question here is about talent. Both men were good at many different instruments, and this is what the question concerns.
