Id go with Hendrix for guitar, The Doors in terms of lyrics/iconic rebel status, the Beatles/Stones in terms of music in general

Out of all the bands listed on the above poll, I would pick Led Zeppelin as having the biggest influence with today's modern rock.
There have been a lot of bands and artist mentioned through out this thread that has had a tremendous influence also, but one of the most influential bands to the rock genre (metal in particular) in my personal opinion is Judas Priest, these guy's are the innovators of metal.

Thats so true, Gimme Shelter did get a lot of air-play during that time . Another aspect to hold into consideration is, the Stones also made it through the disco era with their #1 single Miss You from the 1978 album Some Girls, with flying colors.
