Heat One: Battle of the Bands

David Bowie:

The chameleon of rock David Bowie has stayed within the pop sensibility of whatever era he was currently occupying. He needs no introduction, those that would like his music has most certainly heard it. His most celebrated work comes from the late 60’s to the Early 70’s including my personal favourite The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Gentle Giant:

What can I say? Gentle Giant are the bomb if you don’t have Octopus, and to a lesser extent the rest of their discography notably Three Friends, then you really don’t have any prog worth it’s salt. With very experimental and progressive ideas Gentle Giant mixed the weird with the standards of the time. If you don’t have any Gentle Giant, make sure you get some before you vote.

Os Mutantes:

The Brazillian psychedelic rock band Os Mutantes has been hailed by critics and fans alike, check out their self titled debut from 1968.

The Monks:

Ah the Monks, endorsed by Henry Rollins and Jello Biafra among others, does this band need any more reason to vote for them? Check out Black Monk Time and be prepared to **** bricks when you’re told that it’s from 1966.

Trapeze:

Many of the band members of Trapeze have went on to fame and fortune with bands such as Deep Purple, Judas Priest and Whitesnake, but from the legacy of the band some rather choice, if uneven recordings came to be. Check out Medusa their 1970 Magnus Opus, their other albums are worthwhile but be prepared to be given some very varied quality in songwriting.

Comus 12-25-2008 03:58 AM

Come on people, get Gentle Giant through!

TheCellarTapes 12-25-2008 05:05 AM

Gone with The Monks, they were way ahead of their time and Black Monk Time is just an incredible album, everyone else can vote for David Bowie

FaSho 12-25-2008 09:32 AM

I have to go Gentle Giant. Thoug hI admit I haven't listened to Os.

Comus 12-25-2008 01:05 PM

I'll repeat that ties go to tie breakers here just in case I haven't.

lucylamppost 12-25-2008 01:44 PM

anyone who doesn't vote bowie is retarded

Akira 12-25-2008 01:45 PM

^^ I lol'd but....lady speaks true

Comus 12-25-2008 02:56 PM

Bowie's utter rubbish of his later years makes my comments far more reliable than yours.

Son of JayJamJah 12-25-2008 06:49 PM

Great work Comus

Double X 12-25-2008 07:43 PM

I voted Gentle Giant. I never liked Bowie, even his most accessible stuff.

TheCellarTapes 12-26-2008 04:43 AM

C'mon people, Bowie has this in the bag, get The Monks over that line :soapbox:

Demonoid 12-26-2008 05:19 AM

Damn, Bowie, Gentle Giant and Os Mutantes!@#
Don't have any monks or Trapeze yet, but I fear listening to one of their releases once or twice won't change my mind immediately. Oh well, I'll just give em a listen out of curiosity and get back here.

Comus 12-26-2008 07:29 PM

Let's get gentle giant comfortably through people! Get those votes in!

The Unfan 12-26-2008 07:34 PM

Bowie gets my vote. Trapeze would be second followed by Gentle Giant.

Comus 12-26-2008 07:38 PM

I'm just confused here, two bands go through, Bowie is guaranteed, so why vote for him if you have a secondary preference?

The Unfan 12-26-2008 07:39 PM

If everyone thought Bowie is gauranteed to go through and nobody voted Bowie than Bowie wouldn't go through.

Comus 12-26-2008 07:41 PM

But you could always check who has the most votes before you vote.

The Unfan 12-26-2008 07:48 PM

Since when? Thats total hax.

Comus 12-26-2008 08:00 PM

Check out a poll you haven't voted on, and next to the Vote Now button, to the far right is the "View Poll Results Button" go to the New Releases forum to a poll you haven't voted on and check yourself.

FaSho 12-26-2008 11:02 PM

but then you can't vote at all.

No you can, just leave the thread and come back in and vote for The Monks :afro:

jackhammer 12-27-2008 03:09 PM

David Bowie-cliched choice? So what? Glam Rock, Experimental, Industral Pop, Drum and Bass, Pop-the list goes on. Consistently great.

Son of JayJamJah 12-27-2008 07:37 PM

If by cliche you mean correct then yes. Choosing Bowie is very cliche.

lucylamppost 12-29-2008 07:23 PM

Bowie is a giant and a fashion icon
and brilliant .

Seltzer 12-29-2008 07:54 PM

Bowie's a dead cert so I'm voting for Gentle Giant.

TheCellarTapes 12-30-2008 01:17 AM

Nooooooooooooooo!!!!! :yikes:

Piss Me Off 12-30-2008 04:39 AM

I'm a huge GG fan, but no.

Bowie takes it, however GG is easly my second choice. But I haven't heard the others, actually.

Comus 12-30-2008 05:50 PM

They have the same amount of great albums, bowie has more decent albums, but then again he also has more albums.

euphoria z 12-30-2008 05:51 PM

David Bowie by a country mile.

Bowie:
Man Who Sold the World
Hunky Dorey
Ziggy Stardust
Aladdin Sane
Young Americans
Station to Station
Low
Heroes
Let's Dance

Giant:
Gentle Giant
Acquiring the Taste
Three Friends
Octopus
In A Glass House
Free Hand

Not quite.

Plus, Bowie's great albums are just greater, they're more consistant and distinct from another.

Comus 12-31-2008 06:49 AM

Young Americans, Let's Dance and Station To Station? I don't think they deserve to be on a list with good Bowie albums. Pin Ups should definitely be there though.

Then again I don't like much Bowie after the 70's apart from *cue flaming* Tin Machine.

I like Tin Machine. I think it's only yourself, Bulldog and myself that like them but what's wrong with Station To Station ? Probably in my top 3 Bowie albums.

lucifer_sam 12-31-2008 11:10 AM

Where's Scary Monsters? :(

boo boo 12-31-2008 11:48 AM

I don't know how any rational person could like Tin Machine, they're just that awful.

Yeah, well you have the right to your objectively wrong opinion.

I used to like it a lot but now I just can't feel it when I listen to it anymore.
